Wood Siding Maintenance

Wood siding needs to be treated every 4 to 6 years depending on how fierce the elements are in your area. In the mountain states where the sun and snow can be particularly vicious, you might need to have your wood siding treated more often, and possibly less often in temperate climates.

Stucco Siding

Stucco siding is often attacked by woodpeckers, and the holes they leave need to be replaced so that you don’t have a family of birds living in your walls. They are not hard to hear, so once you notice the woodpecker damage, do what you can to deter them from returning.

Inspect gutter

Step 1: Find your position. Set up a ladder where you can climb it easily or choose a spot around the house that gives you access to the top of the gutters.

Step 2: Run the hose. Take the garden hose, turn it on, and take it to your position. Place the hose inside the gutter so the water will run into it. Either set the hose up so it will not move or get a helper to hold the hose in position for you.

Step 3: Walk around the perimeter. Check the entire perimeter of the house and look for water draining down from the gutters anywhere it shouldn’t. Periodically move the hose into new positions around the house in order to test the entire gutter system for leaks. Use a flashlight in dark areas, and be thorough.

Step 4: Take note of problem areas. Pay attention to any problem areas you find during your leak check. Any areas where water is appearing and shouldn’t must be repaired in order to keep the gutter system healthy.

Time to check your roof

Moss and mold removal

Gently spray a roof moss remover and cleaner on affected areas. Follow the specific cleaner’s instructions to wait for the solution to do its work and then gently brush away the moss and mold with a soft bristled broom and wide handheld brush.

Use of a power washer or hard-bristled brush can wear away granules that protect the shingles from harmful UV rays.

To Maintain Roof

General inspection and repair

Check the attic or other interior ceiling for stains that can indicate water is seeping into your home. Then examine the roof for missing, lifted or loose shingles and check the rest of the shingles for moss and mold, worn spots denoted by missing granules, cracks, peeling and curling.

Inspect siding
Wood Siding and Trim

The two most common problems you’ll find with wood siding and trim are peeling paint and rotted wood.

Peeling paint is an obvious defect that can be spotted from a block away. Paint is meant to protect wood surfaces from decay and rot, but it’s not common to find rotted wood siding because of lack of paint.

It's very important to maintain roof

Loose debris removal

Remove any branches, leaves or other debris that can accumulate on a roof in winter. With another person’s help, if possible, set up an extendable ladder and carefully access the roof and remove the materials.

Remember that it’s always wise to perform roof maintenance tasks on a day when it’s sunny and the roof is dry to help prevent slippage.
