Social Business Design: Extend & Enhance

"Social business is organizing arising out of successful implementing of interaction, individual agency, inference, information, insights & interdependence."
-- +John Kellden

"Organizing is a subset of design."
-- +John Kellden

"Successful implementation is a cocreation of sets of effective and connective patterns."
-- +John Kellden

"Community companies enhance and extend transaction companies."
-- +Thomas Power

Extend, Enhance, Retrieve, Reverse & Obsolesce
"For anyone interested in McLuhan - what he meant by Medium and Message and how to understand and apply his Laws of Media - the quadrad - Extend/Enhance; Retrieve; Reverse; and Obsolesce - this is the book to read. Clearly written, the book takes you through the ideas and applies them to case studies.
It is an excellent primer for any consultant or facilitator. The book offers a great tool for managers, analysts, artists, thinkers for understanding the simultaneous multiple paradoxes that a Medium/Message evokes. For anyone interested in foresight this book offers an unique and invaluable tool for deep diving into any issue."

Organizing: Pattern recognition, quantified self and big data
"The creative era we live is an age of unprecedented possibility compared with the industrial age. Major shifts are taking place: ideas matter more than money and as there are more people with good ideas than there are people with money, new opportunity spaces are created. Industrial workers used to do as they were told. Today, knowledge workers negotiate solutions in active interaction with their peers. We also used to think that organizations outlived workers. The organization came first, and people served the organization. Today, workers´ careers outlive organizations, profoundly challenging our thinking. People have to come first, creating a revolution in work related social structures."

Dark Social

While it's true that sharing came to the web's technical infrastructure in the 2000s, the behaviors that we're now all familiar with on the large social networks was present long before they existed, and persists despite Facebook's eight years on the web.

I'm not going to address the whole history debate +Alexis C. Madrigal brings up in this piece nor nitpick potential holes in the attribution model. Because the fundamental point here is correct.

The Internet has been social for as long as it's been around. The new methods of sharing are increasing that behavior but the 'old' methods still persist and in some ways may be more important. The link someone IMs you in private or the stories someone takes the time to email you are highly engaged and the digital version of word-of-mouth.

It's why you still need to give people the option to email a piece or even print it out so they can leave it on someone's desk. (Yeah, really, put some event tracking on a print button you'll be surprised.) So in the race to improve sharing make certain you allow the private and more established sharing options to persist.

We Made It! 100% Location Independence!

After quite a few days of no sleep and nearly having to cancel our travel plans over a Chinese Visa issue, we’re finally done! Everything has either been sold, stored, donated, trashed, ripped, shredded, or tossed. We filed, folded, sorted, arranged, stacked, moved, shifted, and organized. It was much more difficult than we anticipated but it’s finally over and in the end, I’ve managed to cram my entire life (including all of my camera gear of course), into a few small bags.

In a few hours my wife and I will board yet another Delta Jet but this time, there will be no going home. I’m not sure how I’m going to feel once I step on board but I’m sure it’s going to be a very special moment. It’s been a few days since I’ve slept so it’s difficult to see past the exhaustion but mixed in is a sense of relief and accomplishment. It’s time to begin a brand new chapter. It’s a good thing I packed the espresso.

So, Cheers everyone! And a special thanks to all my friends who have helped and supported us over the past few weeks. We couldn’t have done it without you!

And now, it’s time to rest...
