Fine performances by DiCaprio, Hanks, and Walken. Fine direction by Spielberg. Good collection of background music. Semi-biographical from Frank Abagnale's book.

The Ghost Writer 2016 #Drama Ghostwriter finds more truth than is good for him. 10/10 tinyurl.com/jsfvgzo šŸŽ¬ šŸ‘ šŸŽ

Adam Lang, the former Prime Minister of the UK, had a biography commissioned. The writer was quite far into the project when he died suddenly. The Ghost is a ghostwriter but not a star writer. He is interviewed to take up completing the manuscript. His interview shows his moxie, his cleverness, and his unwillingness to give up looking for truth. It's a fine Roman Polanski beginning.

Shutter 2004 #Supernatural 8/10 Ghost contacts guilty parties through photography tinyurl.com/hy39faw šŸŽ¬šŸ’€ šŸ‘

Early in the film, Jane and Tun drive home from a drinking bout with some of his friends. The road is mostly empty. When Jane takes her eyes off the road for a few seconds, she runs over a woman. When a truck approaches, Tun convinces Jane to drive off. This hit and run triggers a downward spiral into guilt and remembrance.

Darkroom 2013 #Horror Manipulative script, horrid acting; weak slasher film. 1/10 tinyurl.com/n4qhpg7 šŸŽ¬šŸ”ŖšŸ‘Ž

A woman with neutral looks and a routine sort of voice (just about anyone) would have drawn more sympathy, which would have given the film more depth. But no, this harsh, useless, foul-mouthed, unrepentant, murdering scumbag is what everyone has to experience. So the conclusion I get from this dubious casting is that the director wanted the audience to hate the protagonist from the get-go, and greet whatever is done to her with glee. The backstory of the siblings was convenient as well. So, let the slashing begin. The ending was incredibly weak.

Dracula 3D 2012 #Horror Serviceable remake of Dracula, based mostly on the novel. 7/10 tinyurl.com/lhkvqle šŸŽ¬ šŸ‘šŸ‘æ šŸ‘ŗ

I liked the meeting of Dracula with the town leaders. They mention their pact with Dracula: he helps them financially, while they allow him certain liberties. After a number of deaths in short order, the leaders consider breaking the pact. Dracula lets them know his power; only his true ally survives. That would have been a good place to start wrapping up the film: there is no defense against transcendent power. Let everyone know (or suspect) this, then end it. -- The film stays with the book's tradition, though, which is unfortunate. For instance, if Dracula can change from human form to a swarm of insects back to human form in a second or two, why would he allow himself to be destroyed? -- This movie answers that question better than any other I have seen.

Jersey Girl 2004 #RomCom Sad and sweet 8/10 tinyurl.com/z7ygvkq šŸŽ¬ šŸ‘ šŸ’”šŸƒ

Raquel Castro gave a marvelous performance. George Carlin was delightful. In general I do not care for Ben Affleck, but I liked his acting throughout the film, especially with Castro and Carlin. Liv Tyler, Mike Starr, and Stephen Root were good as the rest of Oliver's extended family in Jersey. I got quite a few laughs from the film, which lets me excuse all sorts of problem areas. The plot knot at the end was such a cliche that I nearly skipped reviewing the piece, but most of the film was fine.
