School was out this week, so my boys and I hit the road and visited the Lehigh Valley Zoo in Schnecksville, PA today. It's where we met up with this fine, feathered fellow. His name is Rufus and he's a screech owl. It was windy, hence the title...

The tree was lit last night with around 250,000 people in attendance. It's always a special night in New York City when it comes time to do the countdown and flip the switch to light up the tens of thousands lights that are strung on five miles of wire.

The 74 foot tall Norway Spruce was cut down in Mifflinville, Pa. and trucked to Rockefeller Center several weeks ago. The tree belonged to the Keller family who thought for years their tree would make a great Christmas tree for where it now proudly stands.

The lights will be on until January 7th. After that, it will be turned into lumber for the housing charity Habitat for Humanity. A fitting end for this beautiful tree.

Trees full of leaves, and heavy wet snow, do not go together. It was tree carnage this past weekend. I'd look out the window and watch the beautiful trees that line my street start to bend under the steadily accumulating weight of that snow. I knew they wouldn't be able to withstand much, especially after what Irene recently did to them, but down the snow came. Relentless.

And then it started. Every few minutes I'd hear that sickening sound of cracking followed by a dull boom - another sizable part of a tree literally torn from it's trunk. This happened over and over, for way too long.

When the worst of it was over I went out to survey the damage and it was hard to absorb. There's a strange tension that courses through you when what you see is both beautiful and horrible. The bright colors of all that fall foliage mixed in with the cold, bright white of freshly fallen snow was exactly that.

A White Christmas is something to enjoy, but a White Halloween? Not so much...

Spotted this leaf on the ground in front of my place when I got home from work last night and I knew I'd instantly found my next subject for my new macro lens...
