Despite popular assertions to the contrary, science tells us that money can buy happiness. To a point. Recent research has begun to distinguish two aspects of subjective well-being. Emotional well-being refers to the emotional quality of an individual's everyday experience — the frequency and intensity of experiences of joy, stress, sadness, anger, and affection that make one's life pleasant or unpleasant. Life evaluation refers to the thoughts ...

Seth flags this short film about this amazing project. Watch it. Seriously. P.S. Seth also has some interesting thoughts on what this film tells us about the book industry.

There was huge interest in our OOW session last year on Managing Optimizer Statistics. It seems statistics and the maintenance of them continues to baffle people. In order to help dispel the mysteries surround statistics management we have created a two part white paper series on Optimizer statistics. Part one of this series was released in November last years and describes in detail, with worked examples, the different concepts of Optimizer stat...

Recently I used the COMMIT_WAIT and COMMIT_LOGGING parameters for solving (or, better, working around) a problem I faced while optimizing a specific task for one of my customers. Since it was the first time I used them in a production system, I thought to write this post not only to shortly explain the purpose of the these two parameters, but also to show a case where it is sensible to use them. The purpose of the two parameters is the following:...

Last year I wrote a post about mirroring in ASM in the context of Exadata which discussed aspects of ASM mirroring, including failgroups and the ability of ASM to cope with different failure scenarios. The post dealt with cases such as: Single disk failure in a single cell Multiple disk failure in a single cell [...]

Youtube Jenerasyonu nasıl NBA’de devrim yaptı? NBA’e yeni giren yıldız adayları için yazılı olmayan bazı kurallar var. Sabah kalkıp gazete getirmek, ayakkabı boyamak, 2k12’de tuş ayarlarını yapmaktan bahsetmiyorum. Şampiyonluk avansı, daha ziyade kast etmeye çalıştığım… İlk birkaç sene kimse yüzükten söz etmemeye and içiyor, eğer doğru ortam yoksa, bireysel ödüller, All-Star katılımları, en iyi beş [...]

I don’t get it. Why do so many jobs and contracts seem to insist upon having experience in a particular industry when, in the overwhelming majority of cases, the specific industry in which we work has no bearing upon the nature of our work. I have worked across many industries, but each time I talk to a recruitment agent I get similar questions: “Have you worked in X industry?”, “I won’t put you forward for Y unless you have worked for Z”. It’s t...

The review I posted to Yelp too. This place is the best dealership I have been to. They may be the reason I got a Nissan and not another make. I have been to dealers of other brands, some of them gave me test rides with used cars, some of them gave me test rides with cars covered in dust. Some even could not give me a price for over an hour. Then I went to Nissan Burlingame. David Beskalis and Barry Jeneh were the sales guys who helped me to look at cars. Sammy Elsherbiny was the sales manager who I negotiated with and purchased the car from. All of them were over friendly, warm and helpful. They literally hosted me there as a guest, they took care of my 6 year old son when I was busy, they were very kind. My son did not even want to leave the place. They went the extra mile to help me. Sammy gave me a price in a very short time, negotiated with me and gave me the price I asked for. In the end I drove out with the car I picked. This is how a dealership needs to treat their customers if they want to sell cars. I gave up brands I liked just because of their crappy dealers. Nissan as a brand was not my first choice but I changed my mind because of how I was treated here. Nissan should be grateful they have people like David, Barry and Sammy selling their cars.
