I want to tell you more about my connection with VIDA! They are a global partnership of creators, pairing artists and designers from around the world with makers in Pakistan in accordance with high ethical standards, to create original beautiful products. They use part of the proceeds from the sales of the products to create literacy programs for the makers in Pakistan, so that they have opportunities to learn reading, writing and basic math that they would not otherwise have.

VIDA emailed me recently to ask if I was interested in providing some of my drawings as designs on some of their products.

I'm so happy to have this opportunity to make my art into wearable, beautiful products in a way that gives educational support to the clothing makers in Pakistan.

I looked through my drawings to see what I wanted to send them. I chose some from my book, Froggie's Mysterious Dream, and I chose others that have not been published yet.

These are the four drawings they decided to use.

#13: The Purged.   This is what I developed from the previous pen & ink drawing. I wanted to get a focus on what I saw as a negative aspect of my personality. I think of all of these drawings as various aspects of my personality. And I don't like all of them! He still has a mean look to his face. But I think the rest of him is beautiful! He is showing his full self.

When I have a mean look like this (sort of anyway) on my face I'm angry. So this is my angry part. The half-circles have been unfolded from a tail, they are cymbals that shake to make a lot of noise, like a rattle snake shakes his tail to warn others away. The strange head has come out of a hidden protective area that rolls to the side so he can lock his eyes with his aggressor.  His crown of feathers fans out to make him look more fearsome. He is very intense in his anger.

He may never be completely purged from my personality. Actually he can be very helpful at appropriate times. If I really had an aggressor I want to be able to call on this angry part of me to come out and fight like a wild tiger. So after investigating him this way I realize I'm happy to have him tucked away inside, ready to come to my aid should I need him.

#12 Earth Sprite: Purging.
So, this is another of the Earth Sprite series. When I was working on this pen & ink drawing I saw this mean looking character developing in the middle of the page. I tried to make him look positive in some way. I wanted all my Earth Sprites to be encouraging and happy. But he just wouldn't go that way. I realized that even happy people and happy events can have negative parts to them. It's important to pay attention to them, accept them for what they are, learn from them, deal with them and move on. So I'm purging this negative aspect of me so it will go on it's way.

In my next Art Blog I'll show you how I used this unhappy part of me as the main character of the drawing.

#11 Earth Sprite: Forever Grounded.
This pen & ink drawing is a continuation of my Earth Sprite series.
This Earth Sprite is able to move forward freely into the soft summer breezes because she is grounded on a strong foundation.

A print of this drawing recently was sold at the First Annual Summer Art Sale at Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine. I enjoyed meeting the purchaser who lives in Rome, Italy and is visiting Maine.

#10 Alter Ego: Swimly.  This pen & ink drawing was derived from #6 Earth Sprite Creating Her Alter Egos. When I was drawing him the marks on his body seemed like tattoos to me that must have a very particular meaning for him. He reminds me somewhat of native Alaskan totems.

Before too long I will be posting better and complete images of my drawings. But for now:
The complete drawing is not shown in this image.

Here are a few comments I have received about #3 Heart Star: Birth of Earth Sprite. They are from people who have had a chance to look at the drawings in person.

From MJ: "Looking down into a tree trunk ( the tree was cut several years ago ). There are insects enjoying a home made there. A humming bird checks out the center of the area but of course, flies away so swiftly!"

From LS: "Just spent some time with one of your drawings. WOW! I would not have thought that I would become so mesmerized.
 First, after looking at it for a minute or so, I came up with four images, and then I turned the piece 180 degrees and the free-association was non-stop -- I came up with at least 9 or 10 more. All of my images are complex. Such as "This looks like a totem pole that depicts an eagle/person standing tall with arms crossed. He is proud and thoughtful, with a very high forehead with a blonde curl draped on his forehead and a tuft of hair on top..."
This reminds me a little of those eye tricks that you stare at until the 3-D image appears. Yours is much more fun though--like looking at clouds. Additionally, unlike those 3-D pieces, I could see hanging your drawing on my wall as art work.  A neat idea!"

#9 Dragon's Lair. this is one of the early pen & ink drawings that I did in this whole series of drawings. And like when I was drawing Paper Dragon I was listening to the audio version of The Hobbit. It was a great combination to listen to that wonderful story and to draw a dragon. This time I decided he needed to be surrounded by something. And this is how it turned out.

The complete drawing is not shown in this image.

#8 Paper Dragon. My cats helped me to create this pen & ink drawing. They had been playing with some white tissue paper and I was immediately drawn to the shape they had left it in.  To me it looked very much like a creature of some sort. I started to draw from the basic shape of the paper while I was listening to an audio tape of The Hobbit. Which of course is focused around the dragon Smaug.

The images I place here do not show quite the complete drawing.

You can purchase prints of the original drawings by emailing me at katygtaylor@gmail.com and telling what size you would like to have. Sizes are convenient for use with standard store bought frames and are made on acid free paper.

8"x10" = $25
11"x14" = $30

#7 Alter Ego: Swanish.  This is the drawing that I have been using so far as my background above for my Art Blog.

Here is my own example of how to use this as a Story Starter:

The lovely creature is bowing low to the raven haired princess. They are in the throne room of the castle where the soft spring sunlight floods in through the large windows. The whispering breeze rustles the long skirts of the young princess as she sits gazing at Swanish.
 Her parents are away touring their domain and she is left to see to certain parts of the demands on the royal family. Swanish is there to make a request. The princess leans forward as she strains to hear the gentle voice of the creature.
The breeze whispers in her ear " What could she possible want, she is too beautiful to be in need of anything!"  The princess was eager to hear the request.

So, this is just the start of a story that I might tell. What story would you tell?  What story would your child tell? What stories would develop in a class room?

WELCOME TO MY ART BLOG!!

Today I'm introducing something new; Story Starters!  I will explain in a moment.

This drawing is #6: Earth Sprite; Creating Her Alter Egos. As I continued in the Earth Sprite series I wanted to create a different type of movement for her. I went into my relaxed state to draw and see what would develop. The roots started to change into different shapes and larger creatures developed as part of the Earth Sprite form. Of course this is telling my own story because I am the artist.

But I realize due to the feed back I have been getting from people about my drawings that they are finding their own stories in them.

So I now suggest that one of my drawings can be used as a Story Starter in various ways. A family can sit around their fire pit and use a drawing as a starting point to tell a story, as was done in ancient times before TV and mobile devices held our attention so avidly. Each person would tell a different story because each person has a different point of view.

A student in school or in a college writing class can use a drawing as a starting point to inspire their own creativity in writing a story.

The images I put on this art blog are not the complete drawing. When you order a fine print of a drawing you will receive a complete image on acid free paper suitable for framing and sized conveniently to fit in an 8"x10" or 11"x14" pre-made frame.
8"x10" = $25
11"x14" = $30
