Math Questions  -

I posted this before at Mathforum 10 years ago but I did not get any answer:
Given the positive integer values of n and a, what are the steps in finding the integer values of m such that 2mn+m^2-a would be a perfect square?

Tnx Kermit Rose. I thought there was a way of finding a solution without factoring.

Is there a real contradiction between the scientific law of conservation of matter and energy AND the christian belief that god created the universe out of nothing?
The law of conservation states that matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed.

This question has been asked many times but with no definite answer. Here's a related thread in Yahoo: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091230165617AAfArYw

That is not my god +Mike Mullins . I keep my faith separate from my reason.

You can do away with the conflict if your assumption is proved. Omnipotence would include the power to create something out of nothing. But only IF

On occasions we have been called dishonest, lazy, stupid, insincere, inefficient or corrupt. But we are more than the weakness of our people. We are not the perfect race. We are not better than other races. But the good in us makes us extraordinary human beings.

The result of any computational process can be derived through a pattern-matching process.

Even the primes. Our brains appear to operate through a pattern-matching process. The algorithms that we use in generating/sieving/testing for primes have corresponding pattern-matching processes in the brain. If we can find and abstract the corresponding pattern-matching process from the firing of neurons, then we can find the pattern even for the sequence of prime numbers.

Click-and-Kill with Tupoz
(Only for windows XP, 2000, Vista, 7)

The X on the top-right corner of some Windows applications does not always work.

Browser windows/tabs sometime spawn new windows/tabs when you visit websites containing malicious scripts or controls. Existing task killer tools usually do not provide a way to kill all instances of a continually spawning process in a single click. Some of these processes can spawn instances faster than we can kill them.

Occasionally we encounter invisible processes that resist termination by the built-in task manager. Sometimes we want to terminate a malicious process and immediately erase the corresponding malicious file.

These are the practical reasons why I coded this small utility (44kb) which is now pinned among my taskbar shortcuts. Download this free  tool and feel free to comment after testing it. Btw, when you kill a process, the path of the executable is automatically copied to the clipboard.

An advance version of this tool can do partial and regular expression matching among executable filenames.

How to post a comment:

1. Demonstrate the flaw in the logical process or falsity of an assertion

2. Do not make assertion such as "more logical", "more acceptable", "simpler", without demonstrating that fact.

3. Do not cite scientific theories (E.g. Big Bang, Brane, Decoherence, etc.) with underlying mathematics unless you can demonstrate how the mathematics of that theory applies your assertion.

General Debate  -

Don't you think the cost of formal education is unreasonable? In a school year, a motivated info junkie can learn much much more by himself than a diligent student can in school. Professional, seminal, open-source and shared resources are now widely available on the web.

There seems to be two solution to the problem. Remove government intervention so that schools can freely compete & thus lower the cost OR change the manner of government intervention by allowing self-study as an option for completing a degree. Which is do you prefer & which is more feasible?

General Debate  -

there is existence because complete non-existence is not possible. both the possibility and actuality of existence make this so. non-existence may be conceived only as a consequence of the negation relation unlike existence which may be conceived independent of the concept of non-existence. the reason that there is a universe is because the absence of it is simply not possible.

at least this is what i gather from selected papers at arxiv. i'm still trying to wade through the mathematics that even at zero point energy, space is not empty.

Because the lamba in einstein's field equation is still positive even though the T is already zero. It would take a lot of space to elaborate on this matter. I'm not sure +Mary L . I'm just stating a possible consequence of a scientific theory. I'm now beginning to grasp the math & it seem's that what is not possible is for THIS physical universe to be totally empty. However, the mathematics does not seem to apply to the case of total non-existence "from the very start". Where even an "empty space" is non-existent. Total non-existence is not the same as total emptiness afterall.

does the brain unconsciously learn not only from data but also from the operations of it own hardware in processing data?

+Sandeep Sandhu Tnx for the pointer. STDP appears to be a biofeedback mechanism that results in local changes to the neuron-synapse connection. Might be loosely considered as unconscious learning. I don't know if the change brought about by stdp is lasting and cumulative or if it will result to a change in the processing of concepts. I was wishful thinking about something that could learn concepts and patterns from its own structure & operation as much as it can learn from external inputs.
