What do you think about the 2012 Nobel Prize for Chemistry being awarded to Robert Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka for the study of G-protein-coupled receptors?

Many staff members of the RSC science team were heatedly discussing the announcement and comments abounded on our facebook wall, Abhishek Ghosh had this to say on the matter:

"we should realise that these divisions of Physics, Chemistry, Biology etc. are artificial. Nature does not make any such distinctions. Even if Chemistry ceases to be a separate discipline or field of study in the near or far future, chemical laws and principles will still be studied, chemicals will still be produced and investigated, new compounds and mechanisms will still be sought out."

RSC Immediate-Past President Professor David Phillips commented on the announcement:

"It's very interesting to see that both the 2012 Nobel Prizes for Chemistry and Medicine have been awarded to cell biologists. This shows what an important role chemistry has to play in cell biology studies."
