At present, 2011’s nominal value ranks as the equal 10th highest on record, and the 13 warmest years have all occurred in the 15 years between 1997 and 2011.

Pretty typical day in washington. A bill is suggested that would have obviously beneficial effects, corporations that stand to lose campaign against it, congress bows to the special interests.

"Congress wants to keep pizza and french fries on school lunch lines, fighting back against an Obama administration proposal to make school lunches healthier.... Food companies that produce frozen pizzas for schools, the salt industry and potato growers requested the changes, and some conservatives in Congress say the federal government shouldn't be telling children what to eat."

The act is then justified with ideological non-sense and laughable doublespeak.

"Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee said [considering pizza a vegetable, not restricting salt, not switching to whole grain] would 'prevent overly burdensome and costly regulations and to provide greater flexibility for local school districts to _improve the nutritional quality of meals._'"

Instead of making things, we sell insurance, stocks, insurance for the stocks, and stocks of the insurance.

It may seem remarkable that America’s fall — or impending fall — from first place in manufacturing isn’t generating all that many headlines, certainly not when compared with the controversies over the national debt or persistent unemployment. One reason may be that the nation’s political leaders don’t see manufacturing as a problem. Put another way, they don’t necessarily regard making an engine, a computer or even a pair of scissors as having as much value as investment banking or retailing or a useful Web site.
