So it seems that Google's XMPP story is a bit confused.and I were able to have a chat perfectly fine between an external client and Hangouts. However, Google's clearly removed some parts of XMPP functionality...

- Dan, you weren't actually chatting through Hangouts. You were chatting through Google Talk which itself has a bridge into Hangouts. It only works b/c Randy is a Gmail user and still has access to Google Talk in Gmail.May 23, 2013
- Hmmm... interesting. So Hangouts supports XMPP over to GoogleTalk, which was then bridging it over to me.May 23, 2013
- This bridge is not 100%, as it won't list and communicate with federated XMPP contacts.May 23, 2013
- Hmm I thought XMPP works as I was able to use KDE telepathy client but seems that may be because the contacts might not have switched completely to hangouts. I would be glad to test with someone who switched to hangouts from 3rd party app like kde telepathy. Any one up for test?May 24, 2013
