Watching the UI react to having all its support files deleted in real-time was kinda amazing.

Richard Feynman v. Brian Cox

+chase hickman Cox led the team that discovered the Higgs, helped design, build, and experiment on the largest particle accelerator in the world,  made innumerable published measurements using a truly insane amount of data, and has demonstrated apparent causality violations in matter.

Behind Tyson, he's one of the more prominent modern science communicators, was a member of two rock bands, and co-hosts  the Infinite Monkey Cage with Robin Ince.

Feynman revolutionized quantum physics by framing the interactions of the standard model in diagram form, worked on the Manhattan project, essentially invented quantum electrodynamics, and co-discovered quarks with Gell-Mann at the same time as Zweig.

He was a straight-up interesting person, hung out with strippers, played the bongos, and figured out who fucked up in the Challenger disaster.

They both have fun modes of speech, of opposing tempos (Feynman was matter-of-fact mid-century NYC; Cox is an airy Manchester); interesting quirks, and easy digs.  Moreover, Cox is an experimental physicist, while Feynman was theoretical.  There's always a fun set of jabs between them that would work well in a rap battle.

Even if there's a clear winner at the outset (which there isn't, IMO; science rap battles aren't necessarily about who's got the best academics; see: Nye v. Newton), a well-executed battle could be pretty damned epic.

Honestly, they probably would have liked each other - but the Rap Battle, in my opinion, should commence.

I love hearing a politician saying sane things.  It's a rare and wonderful treat when it's about nuclear energy.
Faced with the task of decarbonising our electricity supply, it would be foolish to rule nuclear power out of the mix, writes Baroness Worthington, in her reply to Dr Becky Martin, whose open letter was published in The Ecologist.

And as usual, nobody mentions that we still do not have one site on earth where we can safely store nuclear waste for the next centuries. (see e.g. http://gizmodo.com/how-to-store-nuclear-waste-for-10-000-years-and-how-no-1658844721 )

Nuclear energy may be a short term fix, but to build a long term strategy on it? I think not.

And also, providing the fuel for nuclear power has huge environemntal impacts (see: http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2008/dec/05/nuclear-greenpolitics ).

So, if you ONLY concentrate on the carbon emissions, supporting nuclear power might be a valid point of view. Looking at the bigger picture, not so much

In the subtitles at 40:39-40:41, there's a bit that says, "[inaudible 40:41]".  The correct text is, "Oak Ridge looked at using NaK*, using sodium, they looked at using lithium".

NaK is short for "FLiNaK", or lithium fluoride/sodium fluoride/potassium fluoride eutectic salt.

The guards are only there to enforce the rules, not explain them.  The explanation for why you can't take a camera into court is because it protects the privacy of the accused and accuser, and of all the jurors.

As for this kid not being a "person"; you're an idiot.  If you were born in the US, and have not renounced your citizenship, you're a US citizen - not that it would matter; the legal definition of "person" is, "In general usage, a human being; by statute, however, the term can include firms, labor organizations, partnerships, associations, corporations, legal representatives, trustees, trustees in Bankruptcy, or receivers."

If you're not a human being, well, that's cool and all, but you might get subjected to a DNA test with or without your consent; humans aren't nice to non-humans.

"There are models, like the thorium reactor, that could solve the problem altogether"

This is, to say the least, inaccurate.

India just put their first Thorium reactor online - however, this is just another pressurized water reactor.  High pressure and low burnup are responsible for the major safety and waste issues concerning nuclear energy.  Thorium does nothing on its own to reduce nuclear safety issues or reduce fuel waste.

What you're looking for is molten salt reactors and, to a lesser extent, metal-cooled fast reactors.  Both operate at low pressure (no boom) and with strong negative temperature coefficients of reactivity (reactor gets too hot, reactor shuts down).  Both are capable of high breed rates (low fissile / high breedable input -> all of it fissions = very low waste per erg).

Story
Introduction
Given that I am the physical processes in my brain and body, I don't find arguments that I'm controlled by them compelling.  Experiences go in, actions come out, and the mediation of thought, deterministic as it may be, is still me, and is still only restricted by the boundaries of reality.

Note I didn't mention "free will" - it's because the concept is redundant; unless your brain is hooked up to some controlling agent*, your "will" is "free".

* Actually, there's a species of fluke that can control another species of ant.  That's an enslaved will.
