The diminishing returns of videogame graphics

The number of polygons a console can create is ultimately what gives you better graphics (not to be confused with art style). From PS1 to PS2 we saw a huge leap and the same can be said for PS2 to PS3. Now that the PS4 has been announced, we shouldn't expect a gigantic graphical leap again as exhibited in the image below. Now more than ever artificial intelligence, art style, and immersive game worlds will be the future - not photorealism.

I'm sure the games will be insanely beautiful and being able to render more thingies at a time is fantastic, but here's to hoping developers use the processing power of next-gen consoles to do more than just make realistic graphics.

EYE of the beholder
Eye of the Moon

A perfectly framed shot of the moon taken through the North Window Arch in the Arches National Park, Utah. There are over 2000 natural sandstone arches in this park.
