First, hats off to her for this accomplishment, because god knows I'm horrible speller. But this story got me thinking if spelling bees, in today's computer driven world, is a bit out dated as a contest. It's great that these kids can spell, and even better that they know so many words and how to use them. But as far as being able to spell these words without some kind of computer aid, is that still even a useful skill?

Granted, there should be a basic 1000 word vocabulary that everyone should have and be able to spell those words without any aid. But beyond that, is anything else necessary as far as spelling is concerned? Along the same lines, is game shows like Jeopardy testing a skill that's useful? Any question they ask on jeopardy, I can answer with the help of a smart phone.
