Life Under a Microscope #1

Part of what will probably end up as a series.

Alright, I've decided to 'go in' on diaspora*. It's got some kinks, but it feels a lot like early G+, and why I've stuck around here so long.

Can be found at I can take refugees, but it's a new pod and likely to be slightly flaky for a bit

Okay, so I'm on diaspora now. Can be found at

If you'd like me to add you, please post in the comments :)

Also, looking for a few suckers to help test my pod. There are probably still kinks, and I'm not sure what site performance is like. And, the whole thing might blow up.

This has mostly been in the back of my brain, but now that I have a pod, it's really come to the fore-

Please correct me if Im' wrong, but as far as I can tell, account migration has been talked about for years, but there hasn't been a solution. This is one of the things that's holding me back~ If I open to the public and have even ten accounts, and next year I can't host anymore, what do those people do? Am I just supposed to say 'sorry, I'm closing down, but you can takeout your data"? (sounds familiar, dunnit)

If there's an option, or even a current discussion thread where I can give input, I'm all over it.

Whelp, it seems to be running anyway. I haven't daemonized it or anything yet, but hey. I also seem to be missing a font/icons for some of the buttons, but that can wait.

so I'm currently

Hosting thread?

Comparing apples: 8GB RAM/4 cores/SSD
for definition, 'block storage' means a lot of things, so at a minimum let's call it a traditional platter array

I know pluspora is on 1and1 which is currently $49/mo 160GB SSD, no block, no bandwidth charge/cap

Some photogs I know use Dreamhost for their websites, and a VS there is $48/mo, 80GB SSD, 100GB block. currently no bandwidth charge/cap

Who else?

Don't you hate it when you have 4 terminals open and accidentally ^C in the wrong one?

'k dumb question #2. Normally when I set up a website, everything is contained in /var/www/website and get everything running on port 80, pull a LetsEncrypt cert, and badge everything over. But here, I either need to get diaspora running on http, and then redo the config files once I've pulled a cert, or... something, because there isn't a website (yet).

I could probably do a phony-baloney website long enough to pull a cert, but there has to be a cleaner way, and obviously I'm missing the obvious.

(I know some hosts will provide a cert on your behalf, but not all)

I'm not gonna quote the source because this 'literally' dates back to when memes were shared between offices by fax.

Dieting under stress:

1. If you eat something and no one sees you eat it, it has no calories.

2. If you drink a diet soda with a candy bar, the calories in the candy bar are canceled out by the diet soda.

3. When you eat with someone else, calories don't count if you do not eat more than they do.

4. Food used for medicinal purposes NEVER count, such as hot chocolate, brandy, toast, and Sara Lee Cheesecake.

5. If you fatten up everyone else around you, then you look thinner.

6. Movie related foods do not have additional calories because they are part of the entertainment package and not part of one's personal fuel. Examples: Milk Duds, buttered popcorn, Junior Mints, Red Hots, and Tootsie Rolls.

7. Cookie pieces contain no calories. The process of breaking causes calorie leakage.

8. Things licked off knives and spoons have no calories if you are in the process of preparing something.

9. Foods that have the same color have the same number of calories. Examples are: spinach and pistachio ice cream; mushrooms and mashed potatoes.

10. Chocolate is a universal color and may be substituted for any other food color.

11. Anything consumed while standing has no calories. This is due to gravity and the density of the caloric mass.

12. Anything consumed from someone else's plate has no calories since the calories rightfully belong to the other person and will cling to his/her plate. (We ALL know how calories like to cling!)

A'ight dumb question number one:
Let's just say I have a hex-core Phenom II with 16GB ram, a 100MB/s uplink, and an ISP that doesn't care. My Bambleweeny 57 sub-meson brain works okay after a good cuppa joe, but my atomic vector plotter is kinda wonky so I'm limited to mildly improbable.

High-res photos would have to be off-site no matter what I do for bandwith/cost reasons. The idea is to give it a go and see what I think, and if it works, great. If I need to migrate the setup to a virtual host, once I have a handle on the setup I think I know how to do that.

Bad idea?

(edit- RAM is upgradable, could go to 32G this week. I got around 5TB free on a ZFS file system. Uplink isn't changeable because my ISP's competitors are Comacast and lolUverse
