In these troubled times- with little or no political inspiration in sight- with analysis that numbs the soul rather than makes you think- a simple song lyric 'can sometimes' 'say it all '... so what's so funny about....

Is writing slowly becoming a lost art?
by Mike Regan

The art of writing is the act of communication. And the war to be won or lost, in the end, is not against the fashionable, commercial or the technological trends that constantly sweep and swirl around the writer's life and times - it's ultimately in the hardest lesson the writer themselves will ever learn. The art of learning how to create and deliver something in a very individual and definitive way, while at the same time, striking a chord that resonates in an audience, making them think, feel and respond in a universal way. It's the Art of Communication.

In my own lifetime I have seen sweeping changes in taste, trends and in the ever changing marketplace. And with the dawn of the information age and its insatiable appetite, there is more written word than ever. The challenge is in the meaning of it, the meaning behind it and whether, in the end, it chooses to have any real meaning at all.
I would argue that this is the challenge good writers have met since the pen and page became the first tool of the trade. And if one has read any selected history on any writer worth their salt - any who chose to write with conviction, with conscience and with the weight of finding the words that wove magic - the stumbling blocks of their times were merely the grease that helped spin the wheel.

We live in a visual age now. We also live in a time where we are force fed so much information that media, all media, to compete, redefines and retools the delivery in an ever increasing speed to meet a 'sound bite' mentality. The threat to real thought and insightful writing (the art of it), is in this ever increasing speed mentality. And that's the true challenge to the writer who aspires to offer more than the moment.
The fight to not only save the art form, but to preserve the integrity of it, is the baton that has been passed throughout the generations of writers who have come before and who will come after. And to win is to win with words with real weight. Words that are insightful, probing and passionate - words that ignite debate - words that define the past, present and future.

I firmly believe the audience always knows the difference between something that fills a void - something that is fashionable and fleeting , and something that creates wonder. Wonder makes them look a second time - makes them re-read a sentence or a passage or a book again and again, makes them go back to a theater for a second viewing or buy a film to watch, time and time again, makes them listen to a lyric a hundred or a thousand times, still feeling the joy of the meaning as if they were hearing it for the first time or makes them rally around a leader who suddenly engages them rather than panders to them.

The true test is in the meeting and the marriage of both: the writer and their audience. In the end, they both shape and define the arts, the culture, the philosophy and the politics of the society they live in.
Writing demands passion. If a writer does not feel it - the audience won't. If the words don't reach - the art is artless. And if the commercial obstacles trip and the writer doesn't get up with renewed vigor - society, the marketplace and the reason to dream or dare die.
And we are all the worse for it if that happens.
