I would after pruning use some copper bordeaux spray to prevent disease. Vasaline over the stub part - but NOT over the cambium, so it can scab over. Try to avoid using those black tar like pruning products when pruning.

If you want to attract butterflies during their peak season, from late summer into early fall, plant flowers that bloom during that time. Tall blazingstar (Liatris aspera) blooms from August into October, depending on your location, and will bring in all kinds of pollinators.
