I'm not a fan of getting up early in the morning, but sometimes it is worth it.  In Antarctica, we got up at 3:30am in order to photograph our passage through the Lemaire Channel.  The water was like glass and the sun rising behind the peaks created dramatic rays of light.

This image was created using a Canon 1D mark IV and a 46mm lens.  The camera settings were 1/1250 sec @ f/13, ISO 800.

Everyone goes to the Falkland Islands to see penguins.  We get excited by these charismatic, often comical birds.  They are amazing to watch, and it is easy to ignore the other species that occur on the islands.

That would be a mistake.

The Falkland Islands are home to a wide variety of different species, some popular, some less so.  Yet even the less well known species can help create beautiful images.

One afternoon, while exploring a remote corner of the island, I can across a field with dozens of Upland Geese.  Unlike the penguin area where predators concentrate (it is a concentrated food source), these geese had survived the hatching season largely unscathed.  They were less cautious and many of them had several chicks (a rare sight in the more predator filled areas).  I spent more then an hour photographing these beautiful birds.  Hopefully you like the results.

This Upland Goose was photographed on on Saunders Island in the Falkland Islands.  The image was created using a Canon 1D mark IV, a 120-300mm lens, and a 1.4x teleconverter.  The camera settings were 1/1600 sec @ f/8, ISO 800.

I am always amazed at how fast a giraffe can run.  When you look at them, they appear to be moving in slow motion, but the reality is they can move at over 30 mph!  The relatively slow gait is compensated for by extremely long legs that cover a lot of distance with each step.

This Masai Giraffe was photographed in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania.  The image was created using a Canon 1D mark IV and a 120-300mm lens.  The camera settings were 1/1000 sec @ f/5.6, ISO 200.

Meet the cow of the primate world.  The Black & White Colobus monkey has a multi chambered stomach just like a cow.  This enables it to eat vegetation that most other animals can't, thereby reducing competition with other animals in the forest.  The trade off is a lower energy level then we normally associate with primates.

This colobus monkey was photographed in Arusha National Park, Tanzania.  The image was created using a Canon 1D mark II and a 500mm lens.  The camera settings were 1/500 sec @ f/5.6, ISO 400.
