7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:7

I love to give gifts to my granddaughter. She is my joy. And I always get back more than I give.

In fact, it thrills me to give to the people I love. However, I’m less enthusiastic about giving to others.

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Matthew 6:14-15

Consider this. You commit a sin and take it to the Lord. “Father, forgive me for I have sinned.”

God rejects your request. “NO. I won’t forgive you.”

You’re dumbfounded and protest. “But Lord, your word says You are faithful to forgive.”

And God responds, “That’s true.

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Do you remember your high school guidance counselor? It was her/his job to help you make the right academic choices to prepare you for a vocation. But when we pray for God’s guidance we’re asking for so much more.

Your request for God's guidance can be a blanket prayer. “Lord, show me the way.

… give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

Discovering God’s will for our lives is often discussed and the subject of many sermons. And giving thanks is just one of the many things we can be certain is completely within the unchanging will of God. But it’s the qualification accompanying that mandate that trips us up. Give thanks in ALL circumstances.

Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

Mark 8:34

There’s an old hymn called I Surrender All, which is what Jesus meant when He said His followers must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow Him.

When I was young, I called myself a Christian, but I never thought of myself as a disciple. I figured that disciples were Jesus’ earliest followers.

24 “The LORD bless you and keep you; 25 the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; 26 the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

Numbers 6:24-26

Many pastors close their worship services with this blessing. I heard it spoken every Sunday in my home church, St. Paul’s Lutheran, in Strasburg, Virginia.

This beautiful passage of scripture is integral to worship in liturgical denominations.

6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

James 3:6-8

When I was in the fifth grade, I participated in a pickup football game.

13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.

James 1:13-14

Have you ever heard someone say, “God made me this way. Live with it.”

I’ve never heard that statement after an act of good behavior. It’s the kind of thing said after a temper tantrum or the repeat of an annoying habit.

He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time…

2 Timothy 1:9

What is your calling in life? Minister? Sunday School teacher? Mom or Dad? Nurse?

We often use the word “call” as a way of singling out our unique purpose in life, the reason we were placed on this earth. It’s what we were born to do.
