Hi, I´d like to introduce myself. I live in Germany/Bavarian alps, work as a sustainability consultant in tourism and have started to grow my own vegetables a few years ago. Next project is keeping a few chicken, and I´d be grateful for tips, links and pointers from those who have already done it in their gardens in a relatively cold climate with natural enemies (foxes, martens) quite present :)
Have a nice day
Dagmar

Thank you! Alas, the place where I am planning to keep the chicken does have only one tree, and that is not sturdy enough for cages/nests. But the idea of a coop somehow raised from the ground is very interesting, I will study possible solutions for that. We have lots and lots of snails, so I will certainly let the chickens run freely during the day, so they can feast on them!

This really makes me feel a LOT better about my usual sleep patterns!

Could sleeping for four hours a night be better than sleeping for eight?
Sleeping in one eight-hour chunk is a very recent phenomenon, and lying awake at night could be good for you, according to scientists and historians.

Integrating solar power into your smartphone
Capturing wasted energy within the smartphone display ecosystem

The fact is that smartphones (and all other computer displays) are not very efficient. 36% of OLED lighting goes into illuminating what you see, and the rest goes to waste. So, why not put that energy to good use - for example, to recharge your phone? That's exactly what a team of Cambridge researchers have accomplished.

A photovoltaic film behind the screen captures wasted LED light and converts it back into energy. Since OLED displays are partially transparent, this system also traps some of the incoming sunlight. Additional energy-harvesting techniques and refinements may lead to a solution that extends battery life for a few hours - and perhaps in the future, a smartphone system that doesn't need to be plugged in at all.

An ingenious researcher at the London Centre for Nanotechnology has managed to squeeze a photovoltaic (solar power) cell into a very interesting location: Behind your smartphone's display.
