Applications for the Summer Trainee Engineering Program (STEP 2014) are open! http://goo.gl/vZ970W

Today we’re featuring Olivia Wiles, a STEP Intern on the Adsense Reporting team in London as part of our “Spotlight on a STEP Intern” series, an inside glimpse of our STEP Internship in Europe. Following her STEP experience, Olivia successfully secured a returning internship and will be back at Google this summer!

"I started STEP after my first year of University. I was thrilled to be spending the summer working for a company renowned for its innovative products and exciting environment. Though at first a little overwhelmed by the technology, new vocabulary and huge codebase, I soon found myself understanding the jargon and submitting code to the Google database.

As an intern, you are treated as a real Googler. I was able to benefit from all the same resources (including classes and code-labs), be a part of exclusive internal releases and features and even try out new products!  The other Googlers were extremely welcoming, always willing to answer questions, give critique on code, or simply chat about their job and their experiences over lunch.

The Intern Summit was definitely a highlight for me. All the Google interns flew to Zurich for a three day summit to meet and socialize with interns from other countries, sightsee and best of all, attend an exclusive talk by Vint Cerf.

I would greatly recommend this experience to anyone!"

"This past summer I was a STEP intern at Google Zurich. I worked with the Research Team on natural language processing. My project involved developing different aspects of coherence in text summarization. This was a completely new field for me so the whole experience was an opportunity to learn. I had the chance to familiarize myself with the Google code base and the problems related to natural language and work on large scale systems. At the start of the internship, the other interns and I also received training sessions to give us an insight into Google infrastructure and the technologies behind the products, which certainly helped us to get up to speed and start coding! I was able to significantly improve my technical skills and had the opportunity to learn about lots of innovative ideas.

My team was also extremely helpful and friendly. Working somewhere full of people so passionate about what they do and so willing to share their knowledge and vision was truly inspiring.
The office was also amazing - sometimes it felt like I didn’t want to go home!"
