"These early spring days, warm and sunny, they just make me want to get in the dirt. They make me itchy. I want a couple days of good, hard, tiring work. I want to be dirty, sweaty, to smell of soil and plants, chlorophyll, and to have my fingers turn black with tomato tar—even though that’s still a ways off, the tomatoes."

Today's post is in response to some reading I did today and comes back to the core advocacy of this blog, which is the need for good work and individual change, rooted in a scaled back way of living. It's our best hope for the future.

A post on the joy derived from getting one's hands into the soil. I thought some here might appreciate it.

I wrote a criticism a few days ago of the "God Made a Farmer" ad from the Super Bowl. I think we need to be honest about the American food system and--rather than romanticizing it while leading lives that degrade, devalue, and destroy farming in this country--get involved in changing it, starting at the individual level. We do that via work, and the necessity of work is the central, but in many ways lost, message of Harvey's speech. #superbowl #farming #sogodmadeafarmer

A recent post I wrote up in defense of raw milk, why I'll pay extra for it, and the importance of being connected to your food. This has turned into the most popular post I've ever written. #rawmilk

The title of today's post is literal. There's something to be said for the comfort of a good, sturdy, mossy tree--available at just the right moment.

The How To Be Poor series on voluntary poverty continues with further consideration of systems thinking, resiliency, and margins. The core of the post is a consideration of wood stoves versus electric furnaces in an effort to highlight how to think in systems.

It's a world of difference, isn't it Carolyn? I can't believe I ever preferred margarine. What a fool I was!

A few pictures of the lamb madness over at one of the farms I work for. See more photos--including a cameo by Icey the llama--at http://ofthehands.com/2013/02/06/photos-baby-lambs/

A recent post I wrote about the American empire, the privilege it affords all of us Americans, and why we need to be aware of that privilege as we enter the decline of our empire as well as a contracting economy. #americanempire #empire
