Out to Lunch (true story)
Just this week I had lunch with several evangelical Christian acquaintances. As lunch moved along, we started on the topic of god, and it wasn't going well for me and my digestion ;)
Anyway, we started talking about Islam and one lady replied "They are all going to hell. They have been deceived by Satan."
Well, I tried explaining a few things to dispute her claim, and she started shaking...no shit...actually shaking (fucking drama, I'm thinking).
Well, to keep the peace, I apologized if I was upsetting her (as if I was somehow causing this), and she then looked at me with the widest eyes while saying...
"I'm not shaking or upset for me..I'm shaking and upset for you and your soul."
"Oh, I see", I said , "We'd better leave the discussion here." and politely I excused myself and left.
My fellow atheists, the power of indoctrination is so strong. For people like this lady, there will never be reason...there will only be "I am Christian and you are either with me or with Satan."
For my part, I will continue to spread reason to any that will listen. I realize people like this lady will never entertain another view...a reasonable view, but I will try nonetheless.
I was polite with this lady as she is an acquaintance. I was polite out of social convention, but I urge all of you not to let them threaten you like this.
You see, sitting around that table with the Christians; it was alright for them to nod their heads and agree that two billion or so Muslims were deceived by Satan and were going to hell. It was alright for them to nod their heads in agreement when this lady shook like a crazy person and pronounced I would end up in hell; but, it was not alright for me to defend my views with reason and the request for quantifiable evidence that a god even exists, let alone her god.
So, I ask all of you:
What would you have done in my situation?
What do you do with family or friends when in similar social situations?
(well, hopefully minus the crazy shaking lady ;)
