I think it goes beyond publishing. How many reboots have we seen vs totally new movies? Even in science, funding has shifted toward established scientists doing the same old things the same way. That isn't where innovative happens. Creativity, be it at a bench or at a keyboard, comes from new voices not afraid to do things differently.
But, new ideas are risky. Seeking new things on a limited budget leads to the populace picking the "safe" option, the option they see as a guaranteed good read.
I admit, I am guilty of it. $30,$10, or 5.... doesn't really matter if you're broke, they are all a stretch. It's a gamble to try someone new. So I get it.
Also being on the other side of that, it's frustrating, b/c I have learned that familiar is not a guarantee for good.

All my life I have heard that parenting is the most challenging task anyone can ever take on. I thought it was exaggeration. How could raising a kid compare to life and death missions? Turns out, I was wrong. I’ve had more fear induced, near heart attacks…
