Your health and safety assessment will help you determine whether a first aid room is necessary for your workplace.

Small offices may not need a dedicated first aid room, but for businesses and industries where there are greater hazards, a first aid room is necessary.

Note that it is a legal requirement for some organisations, such as schools, to have a room set aside for medical treatment.

If you determine that you do need a first aid room, then you will also require first aid room equipment.

There are potential dangers for any workplace if there is little or no emphasis on why hygiene is important.

Primary among these risks is the possibility of infection, whether it’s through poor personal hygiene, slapdash office cleaning or badly managed washroom facilities.

You can prevent many of these problems by having a strategy for maintaining a hygienic workplace.

Every workplace must undergo a health and safety assessment in order to define the risks and hazards that exist and to determine what should be included in a first aid kit.

It is important to remember that office spaces can be at risk from fire - fire prevention and fire safety equipment should be at the top of a health and safety list, supplemented by first aid burns treatments.

Don't forget that when equipment is being maintained, it is extremely important to implement a lockout/tagout system to ensure that power to the equipment is completely disconnected and is unable to be turned back on while an employee is working on it.

For people working with chemicals and hazardous substances it is crucial to stay in touch with changing legislation - this is important in ensuring the safety of everyone dealing with chemicals.

The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) is an ongoing process of revision and refinement that is updated approximately every two years, with the aim of ensuring accurate and up-to-date information on toxicity and physical hazards from chemicals is available.

Don't forget that, as an employer, you must meet the requirements of the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended).

The legislation includes an obligation to provide equipment that protects the user’s health and safety in the workplace.

This includes high-visibility clothing, safety helmets, hard hats and safety footwear, eye protection and gloves where appropriate.
