How does a garage door come off the track?
How does a garage door come off the track?

This is a critical question and when you understand why this happens, you could avert and prevent potential injury and property damage. It is very important to understand how your garage door system works and know when it isn’t working correctly.

There are couple of reasons why a garage door comes off its tracks but firstly let’s understand that a garage door that comes off its tracks can be very dangerous. It can be dangerous for you and your family members. By knowing a little about the workings, you could prevent injuries and save on unbudgeted repairs.

Now, let’s start with a most common issue: running into the garage door with your own car. This is the most common situation that our technicians find in their daily job. Getting ready in the morning rush, your family is trying to get to their job or school in a hurry, or maybe coming back home after a hard day at work day. Not paying too much attention to the garage door that is not completely open or completely closed. Then there is a crashing sound telling you that something went wrong. Sometimes people just forget to open the garage door and start driving without checking. Not the best way to start or finish your day!

But no need to panic! When and if this happens, First, you should turn off the car and as fast as possible get away from the door. Then it is a good idea to call your local garage door professionals such as D&L Garage Door Company. The technicians will come to your location and inspect the whole garage door system. If it is possible please check garage door opener brand name (usually it is written on the housing). This will help technicians to come with the correct tools and spare or replacement parts.

The second reason for garage door tracks that fail are low quality horizontal tracks that have been installed with your garage door system. If horizontal tracks are too weak to be supportive or miss-aligned, a slight impact to the door or rail can cause the tracks to bend. If the tracks are made from 14 gauge steel and reinforced with “L” shaped angle iron, this can prevent bending of the tracks.

There can be another case where the horizontal tracks are not parallel. Usually this happens when the bracket bolts become loose. When this happens, the brackets and rails can start to wobble while opening and closing the garage door. As the result, the system can shake and rattle and the garage door tracks can fail or easily come off or disconnect.
These are just a few main reasons that garage doors come off the track. Of course there are many different situations and cases.
For example:
- One or more rollers wear out or break, that actually adds extra weight on the other rollers and as the result can bend the door or the garage door rails.
- If one of the lift cables is broken. This is actually a fairly rare occurrence but it can happen. If a lift cable is damaged or broken, all the door weight moves to one side and the spring only pulls the other side. In this situation one side remains up in the air and the other one closes.
As you can see from this article, there are many different situations that you can happen when your door parts fail. A good idea is to schedule garage door technicians and service yearly. They will inspect your garage door system to avoid this type of problem. Schedule your annual service by giving us a call or visit our garage door store.
