Portrait photography is fun.  However, I didn't realize how difficult it could be to get someone to give a genuine smile.  I tried to use the advice of +Peter Hurley and avoid the word "smile".  Fortunately, the subjects were my children, so being silly and getting them to make these beautiful smiles was easy.

I watched the story about the bus lady being bullied by middle school kids. You know, I was bullied a lot in middle school. Those years were some of the worst years of my life. Most of the time, the one doing the bullying was cheered on by other kids.

It is important that we look out for our children and teach them how to respect and love others. Also, it is important to teach them to have the courage to stand up for others and have the conviction to stand up for what is right.

On the video, what DON'T you hear? At any time, did another kid on the bus stand up to the "bullies" and tell them to stop? Did the bus driver even stand up to them?

That was my experience in middle school. No one ever said anything about the bullying. I told teachers and administrators and fellow students. No one did anything. And this still goes on today.

I have Photoshop.  Yes, I went ahead and took the dive.  And what a deep dive it is.  I have started watching beginner classes on www.Photoshopuser.com.

Yes, I am a +NAPP member.  Perhaps one day I will be able to apply the last word of that acronym to myself.

As an aspiring photographer, every photographer I know uses Macs.  I've always been reluctant to go "to the darkside" because of the proprietary nature of all things Apple.

But, I drool over the new MacBook Pro.  For those that know me, that is a huge confession.

So, I went to bring my puppy, Charlie, inside today.  He had been running around the yard enjoying life.  But, it was time to come inside.  It's HOT!  Well, for some odd reason, he just would not obey.

I had to follow him through the neighbor's grass, across the street, almost into the woods, and back up the driveway.  Still, he wouldn't come to me (as he usually does).

I kept trying to entice him with playing fetch, the falsetto "Come here Charlie" like my wife does...Nothing worked!  I even got his little squeaky ball that he loves.  Still, no dice.

I wanted so badly to throw a stick at the dog!  But then, I remembered #thedogwhisperer  , Caesar Milan.  I took a deep breath, released my tension, went in the house...and got the doggy treats.

Worked like a charm.  I guess it's like anything else in life - Give'em what they want and they'll love you every time.

I love how Trey Ratcliff talks like "the rest of us".  I often get a little annoyed by the "professionals" and how they "over process" the craft.

Discovering the Art of Photography with +Trey Ratcliff
In this Hangout / interview, Stuck on Earth globe-trotter Trey Ratcliff and I catch up about his relocation to New Zealand, we get “meta” about art vs tech, and Trey shares some tips on how photographers should think about marketing themselves in the digital age.

There's also some philosophical discussion about how people learn photography, and how in many ways new shooters get caught up in the technical aspects of the art… often at the detriment of the actual art itself.

Trey also gives some insight into his new photography training class “Discovering the Art of Photography“ - http://fvj.me/treyDAP1. It's a new webinar series designed to give photographers a solid foundation in the art, science, as well as the technology of photography.

I watched this very interesting episode on #thegrid  and have a comment:  Could it be that many photographers are more interested in being a photography celebrity then generating business?

I bring this up because this is just a natural human tendency.  I am tempted by this often.  But, I realize that as I progress as a paid photographer, I should not expect to be a say, +Chase Jarvis .

I can only be me and hope to learn from others while using social networks.  I need to use it to build and maintain relationships.  If I develop local customers, I can encourage them to follow me on these networks so that I maintain those relationships.

It's a social "network" not a social "store".

Oh boy.  If they pick my portrait shot I'm gonna faint!  I look forward to their critiques though.  Always ready to learn.

We are LIVE with Joe McNally in 30 minutes doing blind portrait critiques on "The Grid." This will be really eye-opening and incredibly educational, and you don't want to miss it (of course, we will rebroadcast starting tomorrow). Join us (it's free) here: http://www.kelbytv.com/thegrid

No, they didn't.  But, I learned a lot from the other critiques.  The main point I came away with:  "Tell a story!"

So, after much thought and consideration, I decided to hold off on purchasing Photoshop.  My decision came down to this:  I'll buy it when I need it.

Although I really want to learn it, I don't have any need for Photoshop at this point.  Lightroom does everything I need.  Perhaps as I start to get some projects/clients and the need arises, I will purchase Photoshop.

What do you think of my decision?
