Bright future:
Only one more month's wait for Richard Ford's new novel!

Writes Michael Kelley: Work underway among libraries to pressure their ILS vendors and ebook vendors to provide integration of ebook search and lending through existing library catalogues rather than 'balkanized' commercial ebook portals.
Read all about it (and join in the struggle, if you can):

One to watch, perhaps: new, two hour documentary on 'The Shining' theories. Particularly intrigued about (people maintaining) the one on Kubrick's symbolist confessions to his alleged work with NASA on the Moon landing fake.

May 4th is the International Day Against DRM
Ebook readers - and libraries - step up!

Learn more from Defective by Design:
http://www.defectivebydesign.org/node/2231

"While DRM has largely been defeated in downloaded music, it is a growing problem in the area of ebooks, where people have had their books restricted so they can't freely loan, re-sell or donate them, read them without being tracked, or move them to a new device without re-purchasing all of them. They've even had their ebooks deleted by companies without their permission."

Sobering memento on hashtag activism in NYTimes today, by David Carr (whose book The Night of the Gun, on a completely different subject, is also very good, by the way):

"The world is one big data problem", claims Gilad Elbaz in this interesting article on his company Factual, which is set to collect all (yes, all) facts.
I'd say there's more to it (the world, not the company, necessarily) than that, but it's still fascinating.

The coolest letter ever written, suggests +Nicholas Kristof of this emancipated slave's response to his former master's call to return. And he is right, too! Don't miss it; it's a masterpiece, at http://www.lettersofnote.com/2012/01/to-my-old-master.html

This is what all local restaurants should be like: sober, easily recognizable, yet interesting food served in a genuinely welcoming spirit, adjusted to your needs, the market catch, and the joys of the cook. If we didn't sometimes have to be elsewhere, we'd eat here every day (or almost).
