Who Will Protect Us?

As a sole-trader, micro or SME you are doubtless inundated with spurious offers of service or product that can appear awfully good … but are they?

We all know the old saying …"If it looks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, chances are …"

But scammers, rogue traders and fraudsters are becoming ever more sophisticated and they are costing businesses, as well as consumers, a lot of money. They can also impact the reputation of your business through no fault of your own.

Is there no one/no body that can protect us?

In Suffolk, Trading Standards is campaigning hard so that you have a better understanding of what is afoot in the area and how to deal with/recognise when something is not as it seems. They are also proactively addressing the problem and identifying those who threaten us and taking action to stop it.

Join us on Wed, 22nd February, at The (ever fabulous!) Auberge in Yaxley, 8am-10.30am £15pp*

when Articulate HLC welcomes Matthew Spall of Suffolk Trading Standards to our next breakfast meeting to talk about all this and to listen to any concerns you have.

We hope you can be there to participate and get a new understanding of Trading Standards and how they might be of service to you.

Bookings close on 15th February

East of England Broadband Bkfst at BT AdAstral Ctre with …

Giles Ellerton, Regional Partnership Director, East of England, BT Regions and a tour of the BT Future Labs who will talk about "Broadband in East of England & Future Plans"

8am-10.30(ish)am, Thanks to some sponsorship from BT, this Articulate HLC meeting is discounted to £10pp Bookings close 12 Jan

A few years ago, we organised a similar breakfast meeting at Ad Astral. Attendees ensured it was a rousing morning as the questions came fast and furious. The tour of the Future Labs was a particular highlight.

Well, the future has now become the present, so we thought we ought to see what BT has to say for itself in 2017 and also view the evolution of the wild and wonderful things we saw in the Lab.

'Beam Me Up, Scotty' Satellite Broadband, a Rural Solution

On Thursday, 17th November, at Ufford Park Woodbridge, (8am-10.30am, £15pp*) Articulate HLC welcomes

Roger H Boddy, Founder and CEO of Global Teleports

to the next business breakfast meeting: "Satellite - The Unseen Solution for Rural Fast & Superfast Broadband"

For so many of us in East Anglia, the words broadband and fast or superfast are oxymorons. We've all heard the hype and the promises, but it always seems to play out for someone else. Government figures show the spread of superfast (or even jut fast) broadband is concentrated in serving urban centre hot spots, with still a great many 'not' spots ...Gives new meaning to the term NIMBY!

Incredibly affordable satellite broadband is possible as the UK already has 100% coverage. This breakfast meeting will demonstrate (and I do mean demonstrate, as Roger is bringing along a satellite terminal to the meeting and will set up a local WiFi and Telephony service to demonstrate the quality of service available via satellite and help dispel any concerns about satellite not being an appropriate medium for the home/home-office user.) how it could work for you. And, it can be delivered without fuss, wayleave or digging up the highways and byways.

Thus, you will have access to the broadband service and sample the quality of the telephony whilst partaking of the spiffing breakfast laid on by Ufford Park Woodbridge.

Satellite technology has improved over recent years to the point where it is most cost effective, most available and is, truly, the unseen solution for Rural Fast & Superfast broadband."

If you would like to attend, bookings close on 10 November.

"Gotcha! - or Not-cha?"

Breakfast meeting on Thurs, 20th October, at The Leaping Hare in Wyken Vineyards IP31 2DW, from 8am-10.30am (£15pp*)

Articulate HLC will be tackling the ever-increasing misery wrought on all of us by Cybercrime.

Cyber Security is a subject that has been propelled into the forefront of everyone’s mind, with major hacking events in recent times, businesses exploited with ease by digital criminals and the exponential increase and reach of technology. Yet quite often, Cyber Security hides behind a veil of mysticism and this lack of tangible risk leads to a lack of protection. Adopting a cyber security culture in your business goes a long way to fortifying against the threat of cybercrime.

As the Cybercrime Security Advisor and Coordinator for both Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies, Paul Maskall Is responsible for furthering the Prevent, Protect and Prepare agenda of the UK Serious and Organised Crime Strategy. His primary objective is to engage with businesses of all sizes and deliver cyber security advice to both them, the safeguarding community and the public.

Here's a tip.
If you want to know if you've been hacked/have an account that has been compromised in a data breach, visit https://haveibeenpwned.com
and follow the directions. It's a real eye-opener!

Richard Bacon, MP, speaks at the Referendum Breakfast at the Swan at Lavenham, 22nd April

To Stay or Not to Stay - A European Conundrum

With all the political posturing and hyperbole emanating from the opposing sides, confusion reigns. At least, that is the word 'on the street'. We felt it was important to get some direct answers to direct questions in a forum where the pros and cons (or put another way … the ins and outs!) of the debate could be conducted with respect, intelligence and inside knowledge.

To that end, Articulate HLC asked the erudite (and indomitable) MP, Richard Bacon if he would speak on the subject at our next business breakfast. With a hard-earned reputation for fairness, courage, independence and good character, as well as many years' service in the corridors of power, Richard seemed a good choice to bring some clarity and reason to the debate.

The decision taken in the upcoming referendum is destined to be life-defining now and for generations to come. We need to properly understand the choice we are being asked to make.

Join us on

Friday, 22nd April, 8am - 10.30am, at The Swan in Lavenham. £15pp

Let your voice be heard. Listen and learn - and not in 'sound-bytes'.

The guest speaker for the next Articulate HLC breakfast meeting will be

Jo Churchill, MP for Bury St Edmunds.

Friday, 23rd October, 8am-10.30am, The Shepherd & Dog, Forward Green, Stowmarket IP14 5HN, £15pp*

This is a woman who epitomises bravery and has beaten the odds to make a real difference to a great many lives. Treated for cancer at age 31, and again 6 years later, she never let it define her. Instead, she used her experiences, knowledge and a passion based on those experiences to become a major campaigner on health care issues. From County Councillor to MP, she has used her position to push these issues to the forefront and to help make changes in both perception and in practice.

With a wealth of other experience that includes retail, site development, heritage and the building industry, as a new MP Jo brings a lot to the table for her Bury St Edmunds constituents as well as in the Hallowed Halls of Whitehall.

Meet the woman, hear what she hopes to do and take the opportunity to ask her about the issues that matter to you. Please use the booking form to submit any questions that you would like to be placed on the agenda, so we can ensure you get a reasoned, comprehensive answer.

And, to reflect the quality of this event, we are once again meeting at the 2015 Trip Advisor winner - The Shepherd & Dog - who have created another terrific menu for us (including those unbelievably 'moreish' savoury donuts as a welcome treat!)

Bookings close on 16th October.
