CHAU MASK MAKING WORKSHOP
Masks have defined us, defied us, and thoroughly beguiled us! Masks provide a window into the soul of a culture, and provide us with great conversation pieces for the home.

The joy of making masks has been a cultural practice for humanity since the time of animism.

Chhau means mask - the most essential element in the folk dance-drama from which it derives its name. Purulia Chhau is a theatrical dance, which is often referred to as a martial art form. The making of these masks is an independent art altogether. The masks have a frank, simple and bold look.

Here's a chance to express yourself and uncover some hidden facets in a tactile form.

BHIM SUTRADHAR
Bhim is an accomplished CHAU ARTIST from Charida village of Purulia district of West Bengal. He has been painting professionally for over fifteen years. He conducted several state level workshops held in Jan 2014 & Mar 2015 as part of Rural Craft Project, undertaken by UNESCO and Govt. of India- Ministry of Textiles- Development Commissioner of Handicrafts.

Suman Chitrakar is a young Patua Artist from West Bengal. He started painting nine years ago at the age of twenty with his mentor Jagdevji. Suman has been creatively infusing new themes to the traditional art form to create a distinctive style of his own. Suman carries the lineage of ‘folk’ artists who paint long, vertical scrolls and compose verses. His artwork has featured in two books – one book on Bono Bibi of the Sunderbans and another on the life of Savitribai Phule published by Azim Premji University. Suman has conducted workshops on Bengal Pattachitra in Delhi with the Happy Hands Foundation, in Kolkata with Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, an organization under Ministry of Culture at a workshop organized at the Victoria Memorial Hall, and in Goa with the Kala Academy.
Suman will engage the participants in an exploration of the Patachitra (Scroll Painting) performance tradition and enable them to create new performative pieces based on their world of imagination that they imbibe from their social and cultural environment. The storytelling and singing by Suman would help participants create new stories and turn them into performances, thereby instilling in participants the confidence to imagine the performative aspect of the Bengal painting’s tradition.
The workshop will be followed by a sale of Masterpieces by the Artisans.
