Ubuntu 12.04's WiFi support has been much flakier than I'd expected -- and I'm seeing lots of chatter in the forums from people who are having the same kinds of issues I've faced, including an inability to connect to networks that are working fine for the people sitting next to me. Have to study this further...

+Dan Gillmor also have the X220 with Centrino Wireless-N 1000. I have found issues connecting to one AP in my house, but the other is rock solid. I had thought it was because the bad one is an integrated cable modem + wireless access point (Virgin Media Super Hub) which has a bad reputation, but now you've said this, it could well be the chipset in the laptop. Turns out the one I have trouble with is Wireless N, the one that works is old b/g.
Do you have a similar pattern of working vs not working based on the wireless standard? Do you know whether your home network is N or not?
I also see the "Disconnected from home network" issue you highlight. I think this is just network manager being dumb, saying it's no longer connected to a network and announcing the name of the last one it successfully connected to. I'll file a bug about that, it's annoyed me too. :)Jun 29, 2012
+Alan Pope Both APs in the house are fine. I'm not actually sure whether we're on N at home (never really looked into it). Is there a way to force one or the other with this card? (I don't see it in settings.) That might help.Jun 29, 2012
+Jeremy Steward will try that...Jun 29, 2012
There needs to be far better error reporting in the WIFI system. I just updated my OpenWRT router and my oldest Linux system now can't connect from a location it connected fine from for years. The signal strength is good and the data rate that it connects at when i move it 10 feet close to the AP is almost full speed, so something funny is going on. I just wish the software were a bit more forthcoming with what is bothering it.Jun 29, 2012
There is a bug in NetworkManager that I hit regularly when backing up my laptops over WIFI. If you move too much data the WIFI is locked up and you have to restart at least the NetworkManager (as +Jeremy Steward mentioned.)Jun 29, 2012
NetworkManager must die.Jun 30, 2012
