Cool!

October 18 is National Chocolate Cupcake Day!

The first mention of the cupcake is traced back to 1796, in American Cookery by Amelia Simmons, with a recipe for "a cake to be baked in small cups." http://goo.gl/3AxWh

Cupcakes are a celebration of life...who has time for bad ones?
Introduction

This blog chronicles my personal exploration for great cupcakes throughout the Washington, DC area. Based on a scale of 1-5, I review cupcakes on their taste, texture, variety, service, cost and accessibility. Join me!

Centrally located in Chinatown, Red Velvet is a short walk from the Gallery Place Metro station. The tiny shop plays home to numerous flavors; many of which are vegan and gluten-free. However after purchasing 4 different flavors ranging from vanilla, chocolate, coconut and pineapple, I was disappointed that all of them were equally bad. The frosting lacked depth or texture and the cake was really dense with simply a sweet flavor but nothing distinguishable. Despite having the makings of an awesome shop (well priced, centrally located, great service, open late, and a wide variety) they fail miserably at having quality cupcakes that I'd want to eat.

Fancy Cakes by Leslie is awesome! I can't say enough good things about it. My maiden voyage to the Bethesda shop included a lemon raspberry cupcake chosen among a wide variety of chocolate-laden cupcakes. The cupcake was a bit pricey ($3.85) compared to it's competitor's price of $2.75 (Georgetown Cupcake, you may have heard of it...) but it was money well spent. The service was fast, friendly and knowledgeable. My cupcake tasted like angels wings and the frosting exceptionally airy and light. I would definitely go back but would prefer its competitor due to price, variety and availability.

The new go-to place for professional gatherings and happy hours, I've been to Recess primarily for private events; all of which were stellar. The bartenders are average but the prices range from $10-$15 per cocktail which is a bit much for a shoe-box sized club. They have coat check, security and have recently added food to their menu. Their food menu consists of tapas which is odd because there isn't any place to sit, eat, or even order said food. Regarding their location they are in a prime spot located close to McPherson Square Metro with ample after hours street-parking (mind the meters).

Tap and Parlor is a member of the triumvirate that encompasses: Bohemian Caverns, Tap & Parlor and Liv Nightclub. Although each have a distinct personality, T&P is the mature and sophisticated sibling of the brood. I've enjoyed dinner there, hosted a birthday party and attended many a happy hour. The atmosphere is part bar (complete with Sports Center blaring on multiple flat screens), restaurant, and comfy lounge with fire place. No matter where you find yourself the atmosphere is casual yet electric and the food is pretty good too (try the jerk chicken wings). Their drinks are awesome but look out for Jeremy the bartender who pours a mean mimosa during their bottomless mimosa weekend brunch. Their service can be exceptional but it depends on their mood and who's behind the bar or serving you. Overall, I highly recommend but don't go with major expectations.

Old Ebbitt Grill is amazing. I've primarily only gone for lunch but the service is impeccable and the atmosphere agreeable. Being only a short walk from the White House, the lunch crowd ranges from lobbyists to politicians and would-be lobbyists or politicians. Every dish that I've savored has been fresh, delicate and an absolute delight. Expect close to white glove service and a tab of $25 for one person eating light and leaving a 20% tip.

Cosi is amazing! I can't say enough good things about them. Fresh and fast food in a cozy environment. As expected traditional lunchtimes (12-2PM) bring about massive lines however the staff remains calm, fast and efficient. I've always found seat space but be prepared to give up some elbow room. Also, I highly recommend their signature salad.

Since its inception I've enjoyed Indulj. This split-level jazz club plays host to live music every week in addition to comedy, poetry and open-mic nights. The drinks are great and the fusion soul food menu is always a treat. The space is abundant when compared to other U-Street haunts however it fills up quickly and is not a stranger to lines. Come with your flirty skirts and cute heels or nice jeans and fly boots. Fellas can enjoy the downstairs bar with with televisions every where while the upstairs has a great summer patio, cozy fire place, and lounge/DJ atmosphere. Also, it's located within a few steps of the Green Line Metro (U-Street stop).
