OEC Japanese Express
Not bad but not Umi. That's expected because it is an "express" restaurant. There weren't many people there when we stopped but they did have a steady stream of customers. OEC looks nice but a little spartan. Pretty good seating for an express restaurant but they need benches or seating specifically for To-go orders. This is the second night of operation so perhaps those will be added.
OEC's menu has your basic sushi items and appetizers like Edamame, Egg Rolls, Miso Soup etc. Oddly enough, there are pics of sashimi on the menu but they don't sell it. They also feature signature items like the OEC Roll, Tornado Roll and Baked Seafood Roll. Habachi Dinners are also available with various basic combos (steak, chicken, shrimp etc).
Sushi rolls were not bad but had an plain and fast food feel to them. Plus, OEC didn't give us chopsticks in our take-out bag. Edamame was good but basic and they didn't include Sea Salt. I think it's a sin to eat Edamame without Sea Salt so luckily we had some at the casa. Habachi left much to be desired. TONS of rice but very little chicken or shrimp. Again, the main items felt cheaper than an authentic Japanese steakhouse. They did give us many cups of pink sauce and this made us very happy.
If you said 'Duh, it's an EXPRESS place" 2000 times while reading this, you're not alone. So did we. Here's the deal. OEC's prices compared to Umi's prices are similar if not more expensive when it comes to sushi and appetizers. The Habachi prices are cheaper in most cases but you get much less food. Also, we were told our wait would be 20 minutes and it ended up being 30 minutes. I know, cry me a river but it's not exactly "express" when there were less than 6 people in the place. Again, they just opened and this might not be typical. We'll try it again.
Overall the experience was fine but we weren't impressed. We expected an express location to be cheaper and faster but it's not. I would recommend Umi because of higher food quality, better atmosphere, more food options and competitive prices. Order your food from Umi and stop by OEC to grab some pink sauce! Plus sometimes they give out awesome dolphin toothpick holders at Umi and those are hard to beat.
I'm sorry but OEC Japanese Express does not get a Viva
