It's a fun summer exercise every year at Basketball-Reference: Neil Paine uses advanced stats to both figure out the best defenses in the league (we knew those) then see who performed the best against them. Turns out, this Derrick Rose guy is pretty good.

I'm really not even sure what I think about this... ahh, that is ambivalence.

Michael Jordan is the benchmark. But do guys like LeBron and Kobe get unfairly slammed for not living up to an unreasonable standard?

Michael's accomplishments on the court transcend the statistics and numbers. You can't capture the beauty and finesse of a game that was backed up by a ferocious desire to win on a stat sheet. Gifted with an indomitable will to improve, Michael Jordan hated losing more than Lebron James and Kobe Bryant love winning - is it fair to James & Kobe? Kobe's game, as seen by any NBA fan, was modeled after MJ and in that sense, it's not insulting because the apprentice, even in style, acknowledges the excellence of the master by mimicking his game. As for anyone who self-appoints themselves as "king" and tattooes such title on their body, I think it's fair game by their own admission of grandeur.

The significance of MJ's almost mythical character either fell at the right time in the NBA, or the grandeur of his charisma catapulted the sport into the international phenomenon it has become. This transcendence notwithstanding, MJ's on the court performance and hunger as a barometer against which to measure other superstars is just and fair in my opinion. Kobe & James will take their place atop the NBA's storied names; one of them might even win more championships than MJ, or score more than MJ....(and you know what's coming)....but, they'll never be MJ, and that's ok.

Ah, Retro-Ball. Where I'd forgotten this was the Ewing Finger Roll game until I watched it. Rik Smits' mustache is the hero we need.

First Jordan now Barkley... Maybe I should offer advice to Tiger Woods too, from my days as a golfer.

I was a looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-lagunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

At this point in the lockout, sure, this gets its own post. But I plan to use that picture a lot, even when the season starts again.

Thought's on Kevin Love's new look? I kind of like it, but it does not make him look tough. Nothing can.

The two labor deals will be very different. But the fact the NFL reached a deal does put pressure on the NBA to get theirs done before games are missed.
