India's first double-decker flyover opens in Mumbai

Claimed to be India's first double-decker flyover - part of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road - has finally be thrown open for traffic in Mumbai. The 6.5km road provides quick east-west connectivity.

What you see here isn't trickery or an illusion of any sort, it's just a magnet that floats above a piece of ceramic, such as Yttrium or Barium. In order to achieve this sort of effect, liquid nitrogen is poured onto the piece of ceramic, causing the ceramic to almost instantly cool down to temperatures of approximately -200 degrees Celsius.

This rapid cooling to very low temperatures causes the ceramic to lose all its electrical resistance, making it a superconductor, that is capable of inducing very powerful, yet temporary, magnetic fields. So when a magnet is put on top of the ceramic, it floats due to the creation of a secondary magnetic field being induced by the superconductor. This is known as the Meissner Effect.

The magnetic field from the magnet and the ceramic repel each other now, causing the magnet to keep floating due to magnetism. When the temperature of the ceramic eventually rises back to normal, the magnetic field induced by the ceramic will go away, effectively removing the floating magnet effect.
