The gospel offers hope to those who are "dead in trespasses and sins," but that can sound like unnecessarily dire language to young people who grew up as Christians and have no experience of sin at its worst. What can we say to show the urgency of the gospel to "not so sinful" second-generation Christians?

The wide (and wonderful!) availability of brilliant preaching online has made it increasingly possible to depend on an 'internet pastor' rather than joining a local church. But even the best online preacher won't teach you as well as a local congregation.

Every husband or father knows the conflict between the daily calls of vocation and family. Striking the right balance takes prayer, effort, and faithfulness, but it's also helpful to consider why the demands of our work have a built-in competitive advantage over the needs of our family.

Leah and I were delighted to welcome little Esther Vogel into our lives on Sunday. Mother and baby are doing well and are grateful for support from family and friends.

Holding Esther in my arms while doing my morning Bible reading made Ephesians 2 especially poignant today. Beautiful as she is, my daughter is "by nature a child of wrath"---but verse 3 is not God's last word on the matter.

"But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus."

It is a fearful as well as a delightful thing to bring a new soul into a fallen world. But it is a wonderful, unspeakable comfort to know that our daughter was born into a world whose God is rich in mercy.

When we head into spiritual battle without our strongest weapons, it's both faithless and foolish. (And all battles are ultimately spiritual battles!)
