With diversity as varied as Melbourne’s weather, Silverbeat are an ensemble almost eluding the genre of jazz.

Five spirited characters band together on a mission to find myriad expressions of beauty.  Jazz is the homeland from which they depart - returning to infect it with rock, folk, classical, South American, and European influence.  Through the simple and abstract, frenetic and mediative, wild and tranquil, Silverbeat weave cohesion in melodic grace and down to earth groove.  Each member brings compositions, virtuosity and idiosyncrasies to the band’s multifaceted personality.

A distinctive use of assorted reeds and an exotic integration of vocals creates a symphonic impact with just five musicians.  Melodies that linger, quirky lyrics that seduce and harmonies that send shivers meld into a inspirational performance of poetic wit and majestic intrigue.

Jacqueline Gawler - vocals
Lachlan Davidson - reeds
Jeremy Woolhouse - piano
Tamara Murphy - bass
Phil Collings - drums

“...tunes that are spacious, brooding, unpretentious in their delivery, and unfailingly lovely.”  - All About Jazz

“... a schema for what could so easily be a cinematic soundtrack.  The story of the film would tell of passion; brooding, melancholic and wistful, each mood is underscored by the bowing of the bass....” - JazzViews

“...a musical journey that is full of brooding, melancholy, and sense of regret ... whilst these moods are sustained throughout the album, it is never mired in its emotional world, rather, there is a sense of transcendence, hope and quiet resilience.” - ejazznews

“Theirs is a jazz without boundaries, one that stirs in a classical use of space and a progressive penchant for unusual song construction..” - Something Else

A gentle, quiet, but expansive trio with lots of space for each member's individual voice, and a little humour.

Emma Gilmartin - Vocals / Composition
Jeremy Woolhouse - Piano / Composition
Frank Di Sario - Bass

Vocalist Emma Gilmartin and pianist Jeremy Woolhouse first met as colleagues studying at the VCA.  Collaborating on various projects for 15 years, the two have found subtle ways of complementing each others musicality.  In trio format, Frank DiSario brings his vast experience and bass playing expertise to the ensemble.   The trio create an intimate, relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

Songs which have been inspirational to Emma and Jeremy are presented along with compositions from each.  The repertoire thus covers some jazz classics, modern hits, world music and contemporary works.  Influences include Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Louis Armstrong, Jeanne Lee, Ran Blake, Norah Jones, Joni Mitchell and Astor Piazzolla to name a few.

The intimacy of the duet allows for spacious, relaxed interaction between pianist Jeremy Woolhouse and bassist Shannon Birchall.   The duo feature compositions from Jeremy stemming from the traditions of jazz and branching out to embrace gospel, contemporary jazz, pop, classical and South American music.

In the duet setting, the virtuosity of Shannon Birchall comes to the fore as the bass weaves a rich tapestry with the piano.  Soaring bowed melodies and contrapuntal interplay contrast steady groove and dramatic unison.  Jeremy and Shannon first collaborated in 2002 in the Estuary Three jazz-tango project on Jeremy’s album Thumbnails.  The duo reunited in 2012 to record The Scenery of Life Unfolding and continue the journey into lightness and darkness, illusion and delusion.
