It's been a while since we have published anything, but that doesn't mean we haven't been busy. In tango everyone talks about practicing their walk, but no one seems to think that includes walking in a circle.

We are questioning tango gender roles, the idea of gender based tango movement and practice. Tango is not a gender specific dance. Are you a lame leader? Are you a solid follower? What do you practice?

We are always talking about good posture, it is so easy to lose any time of day or when entering into the embrace. Here are some idea's that will help you find it and keep it throughout your days and in your dance.

+Cami Joy-Rocha  I agree, shoes are just a tool. Good tools are important. And tools that can help us discover better technique and refine our skills are invaluable. I think it is possible to be successful no matter what you choose to wear. Heels are in some ways a hinderance. The smaller axis of movement requires the wearer to be more responsive in a reach for any step, especially the back step. They require the wearer to be much more precisely on axis. This is not to say that the same cannot be achieved in flat shoes. This sort of precision is actually important for everyone, leader or follower, heels or flats. Flat shoes take more concious effort because there is more tolerance of poor axis control in flat shoes. Heels and flats each have their place. Mostly I wanted to point out that men should be practicing the molinette. Walking in tango is not just walking in a straight line and the molinette is at the core of tango. It is walking in a circle.  I wear flats to dance too. :-)

Here's another awareness challenge! This one is about settling into your standing posture. This is so simple and so very important in your dance and in the way you stand and move everywhere you go.

The study and practice of Argentine tango and movement
Introduction
We are located in Asheville, North Carolina, and have developed a tango vinyasa, TangoBreath, to aid in the development of  Argentine tango in our community.  We have a weekly class which consists of one hour of TangoBreath and one hour of TangoLab and a 2+ hour practica.  TangoLab is the time in which we apply our movement within the embrace and the music.  We are compelled to write about what we know and what we learn on our website.
