Over the Bank Holiday Weekend I knocked up a short article about surface finish and a handy comparison chart.

We are looking to collaborate with industrial designers - we have a facility at Silverstone that could be used as a base and a wide range of machinery and extensive contacts regarding the production of small metal parts.

If you have any suggestions that could help us develop this idea please contact me

Visited Mach 2016 at NEC on Friday with Jack Wignall.

Excellent day - lots to see

We were able to answer a lot of questions we had particularly with regard to - work holding and software.

Visit to Autosport Exhibition at NEC today.
Lots to see and friends in the industry to catch up with
The MIA Motorsport to Defence workshop was informative with a great mix of attendees from Military, Defence Primes and SME's. I feel motivated to pursue some additional defence work for the business.

MAS will be wound down

Disappointed to hear that Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) will be wound down by George Osbourne. I believe this could be very short sighted, MAS started in 2002 and has provided valuable support to a very large number of SME’s.

The question is
Will the new “Growth Hubs” be able to understand the needs of manufacturing businesses and deliver a better level of specific expert help than MAS?

Materials that can be Wire or Spark Eroded

The list of materials that can be machined successfully with EDM Electro discharge machining is very extensive, we decided it would be a good idea to list some of them below.

However a simple rule is that if the material can conduct electricity it can be machined using either wire or spark erosion. The only other thing to consider is – has the material or part been coated, often a coating will impair electrical continuity. For EDM to be possible there needs to be sufficient uncoated areas for continuity to be established through the part.

Materials that we have sucessfully machined at Silverstone

Aluminum (Including lithium alloys)
Steel (EN1-40, 4130,
Austenitic Stainless Steels (304, 304L, 316, 316L, 302, 6MoS31254, Nitronic 60)
Ferritic Stainless Steels (430, 444, Cr12)
Martensitic Stainless Steels (410, 420, 431,440, 416)
Duplex Stainless Steels (2304 S32304, 2205 S31803, Super duplex)
Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steels (17-4 PH, 13-8 PH)
Titanium (Ti 6Al4V, Grades 1-5)
Copper Alloys (CuBe, CuW)
Inconel (625, 718, 725)
Bronze (Phosphor bronze)
Nickel Copper Alloys (Monel, Nicorros)
Nickel Chromium Alloys (Hastelloy, Incoloy, Inconel, Nicrofer, Nicrom, Nimonic, )
Nickel Iron Alloys (Invar, Kovar)
Tool steels (D2, P20, Stavax, Unimax)
Magnesium Alloys
