Steven Pinker addresses the outdated conviction that Science is incompatible with the Humanities. http://goo.gl/T8XPux

"One would think that writers in the humanities would be delighted and energized by the efflorescence of new ideas from the sciences. But one would be wrong. Though everyone endorses science when it can cure disease, monitor the environment, or bash political opponents, the intrusion of science into the territories of the humanities has been deeply resented."

I'm not sure this is a viable new notation, but it's really neat.

Thank you, truth is not often presented so convincingly.

Planetary Resources give a glimpse at their first satellite designs.  I'm pleased that the scale really is as small as I was imagining, and impressed that their basic package isn't too far from where I was sketching a few months ago.

I hadn't seen this before.  It won't change any deniers' minds, but it's nicely laid out. moon hoax not

I curl up with my dog sometimes, but now I want a reindeer.  I've never managed to get a fallow deer buck to sit this still.

And I thought building quadcopters was fun. These are transgressive in a completely different way.

Space Oddity
This man really understands the need for science to connect with people.

And a nice story from the CBC: http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2013/05/10/f-chris-hadfield.html

A nice piece of work.  Really gives me the urge to get my forge up and running again.

I'm fine with trusting one's colleagues, it's the stray air currents and the expectation of predictability that would get me.  Though perhaps I'm being fooled by the foreshortening of the camera view, too.

I clearly want either an Italy week or an Egypt week.

What the World Eats - a remarkable and beautiful comparison.

Photographer Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio traveled the world to get pictures of families together with the food they would eat that week and compared family size, food, processing and costs. ➜ goo.gl/kRIWz

Expenditure on food for one week (prices from 2005):
● Chad  → $1.23        ● Ecuador → $31.55     ● Mongolia → $40.02
● Egypt → $68.53      ● UK        → $253.15    ● Italy        → $260.11
● Japan → $317.25    ● USA      → $341.98    ● Germany → $500.07
