Most of Thursday I prepared for a talk/reading in support of the Killaloe Public Library in my home town. I knew that many there would be friends and family, so I wanted it to be special. Several times, I paused my talk to give out door prizes. This was…

It was voting day today. My husband and I went at 5:3o, both of us unsure where we would put our mark (as no doubt many in Ontario felt). It was 1-minute drive to the parish hall. The “officiates,” an older woman and a young back-to-the-land sort, were…

Reporting in: writing on the road & research treasure hunts

Richard and I just returned home after a week on the road touring Montreal, Quebec City and the Eastern Townships. Quebec is such a beautiful province! We ate so well, I didn’t want to leave. (Not that we don’t eat very well at home: Richard is a…

Today—Thursday, June 24th—is the bicentennial anniversary of Josephine’s death, 200 years ago. Special exhibits have been shown in Paris, and there will be a very special event at Malmaison, no doubt. In the past, Malmaison has marked this day with a…

"Gulland has chosen her era well and her lively, pull-no-punches style and spot-on imagery hide her impeccable research."

This is a thumbs-up review, but the word "hide" here is a bit confusing. I wish it had been "display"—but suspect what the Toronto Star reviewer means is that a show of research (an "info dump") is off-putting in a novel. I agree!

Introduction
I'm the author of four novels

The first three, The Josephine B. Trilogy, are internationally best-selling novels about Josephine Bonaparte, now published in 17 countries (last time I checked). Over a million copies sold, the Trilogy goes through entire families like a flu.

My most recent novel, Mistress of the Sun, was deemed “dangerously seductive"—a review quote I love. It too made bestseller lists and is presently published in 9 countries.

Fascinated by the junction of historical fact and fiction, I am writing another novel set in 17th century France, this one about the cut-throat theatre wars of the period—Corneille! Racine! Molière! (Yes: I'm overwhelmed with research.) Naturally this novel also involves yet another of the Sun King's lovers as well as a witch.

Something of a Net junkie, I blog, tweet, tumblr and now, Google Plus.

For more on all of the above, see my website.
