An Iowa City Tradition Since 1948, John's is the untypical corner grocery specializing in Beer, Wine, Liquor, and fresh Deli & Bakery items. A mainstay on the corner of the University of Iowa campus in the oldest established business in town that dates back to 1848.

Hometown grocery store with good prices. If you like to support local business, this place is the place to go to!

John's has the finest beer selection I have found outside Chicago, and perhaps the largest number of Belgian and German beers I have seen anywhere. The U.S. microbrews are perhaps a bit uneven; I'm partisan, of course, but I'm a bit startled to see so few small Wisconsin breweries represented. It should be noted that their wine room, though a good bit smaller than their beer rooms, is thoughtfully supplied. Even so, John's is probably not the place to go if you are looking for an obscure label. Lastly: John's is the only place in Iowa City with non-HFCS tonic water. That is smart.

I've been stopping there about 30 years, off and on, seems I can usually find close-enough items. Main shopping is elsewhere. Handy location, poor parking, the deli turns out some good stuff.

There's nothing better than having a neighborhood grocery. Amazing selection of goods, terrific wines and beers at excellent prices, and everybody knows your name. When your husband's on the way to buy some wine you can even call John's and ask them to be sure he buys ice as well. What's not to love?

Johns is by far the best place to buy beer in Iowa City, such an enormous selection that it can be overwhelming deciding which beer you should drink. Everyone who works there is super friendly and are very helpful!

I guess old-fashioned neighbor-like service means "no" service. I was just in there and the guy in the wine department told another employee that he was bored and that there was nothing to do. All he was doing was sitting on a computer "not" helping me. I walked out without purchasing anything. If this is old fashioned service then it's time to step up to the new age where service is everything.

John's beer selection is amazing. Their belgian beer section alone should be declared a national treasure. John's is one of the best things about living in Iowa City. Also, the service has always been excellent when I have been there.
