There are some ugly cars you wouldn't want to own or even be seen in, but over the years, I discovered quite a few stylistically-challenged vehicles that were a pleasure to drive.  Here then are the "Top Ten Ugly Cars that are Surprisingly Nice to Drive."  http://www.autos.ca/chrysler/top-picks-top-ten-ugly-cars-surprisingly-nice-drive/

Torquey diesel engines make a lot of sense in heavy vehicles like pickup trucks and large SUVs. They have the power and towing capacity along with fuel economy that's better than gasoline-fueled alternatives.  But while I welcome the new 3.0-litre V6 'EcoDiesel' engine in the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, it's only available in the most expensive trim levels.  My test vehicle was priced close to $70K!   Read my full report on Autos.ca http://www.autos.ca/car-test-drives/test-drive-2014-jeep-grand-cherokee-summit-4x4-ecodiesel/

I'm advocating wipers on the front side windows.  Crazy idea?  Yes, until you actually need them.  Picture this: you're driving in the city in the evening when it's raining heavily and you're making a left turn at an intersection.  You look left to see if there are any pedestrians crossing the lane where you are about to turn.  Rain is streamiing down the driver's side window and headlights are shining in your face and creating reflections on the road surface.  The pedestrian is wearing dark clothing.  The light has turned yellow.  You start the turn and discover  a pedestrian in front of you that you didn't see.  Would wipers on the driver's side window have helped?  I think so.  Read my rant here:  http://www.autos.ca/vehicle-safety/monday-rant-time-wipers-front-side-windows/

With an extended wheelbase, the new Panamera Executive models are aimed at buyers in China, Russia and Asia who prefer to sit in the back and let someone else do the driving.  Extra rear legroom, luxurious seats and rear controls give the affluent passengers a first-class ride. See my full review at  http://www.autos.ca/car-test-drives/test-drive-2014-porsche-panamera-turbo-executive

The 2014 Hyundai Tucson AWD proved to be very capable when driving in the snow. Full-time all-wheel drive, lockable centre differential, downhill assist system and Dunlop Graspio winter tires combined to provide excellent traction.  See my review on Autos.ca http://www.autos.ca/car-test-drives/test-drive-2014-hyundai-tucson-limited-awd/

With more power from its new 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine and a quieter cabin thanks to increased sound insulation, the 2014 Hyundai Elantra is a nicer vehicle to drive and more on par with some of its competitors.  However, the 2.0-litre engine is only offered in the Elantra's (most expensive) top two trim levels.  Read my full review on Autos.ca  http://www.autos.ca/car-test-drives/test-drive-2014-hyundai-elantra-sedan/

Smaller than compact SUVs like the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V, the Chevrolet Trax has the higher ground clearance and higher seating position of an SUV, plus the availability of all-wheel drive, with the footprint of a subcompact hatchback.  That makes it easier to manoeuvre and park in the city.  An SUV for urbanites!  Available in 140 markets around the world, but not in the U.S.; Americans do get its upscale cousin, the Buick Encore.  See my full review of the Trax here http://www.autos.ca/car-test-drives/test-drive-2014-chevrolet-trax-awd-lt/

I recently drove the new 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid and the 2014 Toyota Camry Hybrid in the same week to compare fuel economy, driving dynamics, comfort and practicality.  Both had their good points but one seemed to be a better all-around hybrid package than the other.  See my Comparison Test on Autos.ca

My colleagues at Autos.ca recently completed a comparison test of eleven new compact cars and rated them from best to worst.  This is a must-read if you are thinking about buying a new compact car - or even if you aren't.  http://www.autos.ca/car-comparisons/comparison-test-2013-2014-compact-cars/
