Now into its second model year, BMW's unique i3 electric car is available with or without a 'range extender' 2-cylinder engine that charges the battery after the initial charge runs out.  Its electric only range varies between 110 km and 150 while the range extender can add another 100 km to that.  It's not as much as a conventional car but the battery range is sufficient for typical daily commutes if recharged every day or two.  See my full test drive report on Autos.ca

The 2015 Ford Focus sedan is now available with Ford's lively turbocharged 'EcoBoost' 1-litre 3-cylinder engine.  But it only comes with a 6-speed manual transmission and only in the sedan bodystyle in the SE trim.  It's a great little engine, but works hard, resulting in fuel consumption higher than NRCan's official fuel economy ratings.  See my full test drive on Autos.ca

Equipped with the optional 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine and 9-speed automatic transmission, the new Fiat 500X crossover is a competent performer with great handling, but equipped with the base turbocharged 1.4-litre four and 6-speed manual transmission, the 500X feels underpowered.  With available all-wheel drive, a driver-selectable Traction+ performance mode, and 201 mm of ground clearance, the 500X is ready to take on winter weather.  Two styling themes are offered: urban cool and SUV rugged:  I like the more rugged styling of the Trekking and Trekking Plus trims.  See my First Drive report with full photo coverage on Autos.ca!

In Southern California today test driving 2016 Fiat 500X. Better looking than 500L. Ranges in price from $21,495 to $32,690. I'll have driving impressions in my First Drive report on Monday on www.Autos.ca

Electric cars hate the unexpected: today's ferry to Vancouver Island was delayed by 45 minutes. It was pouring rain and bone-chilling cold. Drivers of the three electric cars in the 2015 EcoRun #ecorun2015 had to choose between staying warm by leaving the heater and fan on while parked and using up valuable battery power or remaining cold and damp with the ignition off and saving power. #ajacanada

Gotcha, my jesting was likely latent ON-based jealousy at both this winter's extra mild BC weather and DC fast-charger envy, both made worse for us EV owners by the crazy cold Feb we just suffered through. :) But in case you or anyone else driving a BEV gets in a tight spot, or ideally before you leave, check plugshare.com for nearest DC QC, as it could have told you that there is a 24-7 DC QC in Duncan, strategically placed half way between Nanaimo and Victoria. Unfortunately, these don't always show up in vehicle navi systems until you charge there.
So yes, agree with you that unexpected battery drain can unfortunately mess with road trip scheds there, as anywhere. All I'm saying is BC BEV owners have a lot more long distance driving options than anywhere else in the country, so hopefully there won't be a need for anyone at EcoRun to be stranded, or drive cold, even with surprises.
But sure, just because you're in the mildest/rainiest spot in the Sahara Desert of Quick Chargers that is Canada, doesn't mean you couldn't use more water.

If the lease on your Mercedes-Benz C 350 4Matic sedan is coming due soon and you’re considering stepping into the all-new C 400 4Matic sedan, here’s what you can expect: gutsier acceleration, improved fuel economy, superior handling, upgraded interior quality, a roomier cabin, a fancier infotainment system, more safety features, and a new exterior design that takes obvious styling cues from the swanky, top-of-the-line S-Class sedan. Oh, yes, and a higher price tag.

Just spent a week in the 2015 Nissan Sentra in mid-level SV trim.  I was surprised at how much car this is for under $21,000 including Freight and PDI charges of $1,567.   It's well-equipped, roomy, fuel-efficient, comfortable and easy to drive.  My test car had the base 6-speed manual transmission which proved easy to operate even in stop-and-go traffic. Optional is a continuously variable transmission with simulated gear changes to make it feel more like a regular automatic.  See my full review on Autos.ca.

The 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI is one of the few cars that can offer both outstanding fuel economy and great driving dynamics – unlike most hybrids. Now riding on VW’s larger Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform which underpins all the latest VW and Audi small cars, the 2015 Golf TDI offers across-the-board improvements over its predecessor: more horsepower, better fuel economy, improved ride and handling, a quieter cabin, upgraded interior quality, more interior room, a bigger trunk, improved connectivity, and improved safety.  See my full driving impressions here...

Are your kids and friends tired of trying to squeeze into the back seat of your two-door Mini Cooper S?  Now they can have their own doors, and you can have almost as much fun driving this small performance hatchback.

After driving a variety of new vehicles with alternative powertrains and fuels in the annual AJAC EcoRun, I decided to take a stab at predicting which powertrains will still be around in ten years. Be forewarned: my views won't please everyone, but this is the way I see it.  http://www.autos.ca/green-scene/feature-the-powertrain-of-tomorrow/

Test Drive: 2016 Mazda6 GT.  Despite positive media reviews and winning AJAC's 2014 Canadian Car of the Year Award, the mid-size Mazda6 sedan is not selling well in Canada. Just released, the 2016 Mazda6 features enhancements and upgrades that may add to its appeal, but the fact that it offers only one four-cylinder engine when competitors offer more powerful options may be limiting its appeal. Read more about the 2016 Mazda6 in my test drive report on Autos.ca   http://www.autos.ca/car-test-drives/test-drive-2016-mazda6-gt/

All 2015 Honda CR-Vs have significant changes, but the top-of-the-line 2015 CR-V Touring trim also includes some new safety features that actively avoid collisions and can almost do the driving for you.  See my full review on Autos.ca   http://www.autos.ca/car-test-drives/test-drive-2015-honda-cr-v-touring/
