Federated learning
It works like this: your device downloads the current model, improves it by learning from data on your phone, and then summarizes the changes as a small focused update. Only this update to the model is sent to the cloud, using encrypted communication, where it is immediately averaged with other user updates to improve the shared model. All the training data remains on your device, and no individual updates are stored in the cloud.
This is a great model for protecting privacy but still train a central model!

The most unusual StreetView ever...if you don't become a miniature railway enthusiast after watching this video you never will :-)

For an example of the insanely detailed models, check out this SV scene of the airport terminal: http://www.google.com/maps/about/behind-the-scenes/streetview/treks/miniatur-wunderland/#airport/terminal-frontside

Open Source Release of TensorFlow

I'm very excited to announce the open source release of the TensorFlow machine learning library that I and many others at Google have been building.

This blog post gives an overview:
  http://googleresearch.blogspot.com/2015/11/tensorflow-googles-latest-machine_9.html

The web site has a number of tutorials and documentation about the system:
  http://tensorflow.org

The source is on GitHub:
  https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow

You might also be interested in the whitepaper we've prepared that describes TensorFlow in more detail:

We'd love to hear what people think.

One more reason to be certain that +Google Cloud Platform has the world's best infrastructure: while bragging about their network, a competitor shows images of Google's network.  (Happened last week, see screen capture below.) Thanks for the acknowledgment, +Amazon Web Services! But next time please show our logo on the slide :-)

Shout-out to +Timothy Prickett Morgan for noticing this first.

Nice explanation of how the jet engines work.
This site is chock-full of awesome: it's a bunch of detailed and clear animations about how things work, ranging from jet engines, to speakers, to tarantulas. If you enjoy seeing the insides of things, it's a great job of technical illustration.
