Cleft lip and cleft palate are birth defects that occur when a baby’s lip or mouth do not form properly. About one in 1,000 babies are born with cleft lip/palate. Surgery to repair a cleft lip/palate usually occurs in the first few months of life. Many children will need additional surgeries as they get older.
