With Disney's track record for female characters as princess, it's pretty significant that the female protagonist in Pixar's "Inside Out" is an everyday girl. "Pixar successfully sold a movie about a girl's emotions in an industry that doesn't always seem concerned with girls' minds," wrote Elianna Dockterman from TIME magazine (@edockterman). It is the first original film to break the highest-grossing opening weekend record, cracking a hole in the theory that movies about females don't make money. http://ow.ly/OEVrC

E3 brings in female heroines to their once male-only gaming franchise. Thoughts?http://ow.ly/OuOUR

"In the ESA study of people who play games, women ages 18 and older now outnumber boys younger than 18 by more than double, 36 percent to 17 percent."
Women protagonists have a storied role in video games, but few series let you choose to play as either male or female characters.

Women in war movies are limited to 4 types of roles. Use the hashtag #TeachHer to join the conversation. http://ow.ly/OsRXa
We looked back through some classic and not-so-classic war movies to see what roles women tend to play. Turns out, there are about four. And they're pretty predictable.

Alysia Reiner, otherwise known as Fig from "Orange is the New Black," talked with Huffington Post about her role, typecasting, the importance of seeing more women in film and mentioned the Geena Davis Institute. Thanks @alysiareiner! http://ow.ly/OhqH4

"I work with the Geena Davis Institute a lot -- there's this fantastic piece that Geena Davis did about the importance of seeing more women in the media. Statistically, when you watch TV, even "Sesame Street," even cartoons, 77 percent of the characters are male. So your children are unconsciously getting the message that women are a minority and, hence, perhaps not as important. She talks about how the characters don't have to be heroes. They just have to be there."
Natalie "Fig" Figueroa may not be very popular among the Litchfield Penitentiary inmates. But the character, and the amazing actor who brings her to life, have both become fan favorites sinc
