It is the first week in July which means boaters take to the water to watch fireworks or cruise around during the three day weekend. With that lead-in for the #QuestionOfTheWeek, we ask. What should a skipper under power do when entering a congested waterway or harbor?
A. Depart the navigable channel and search for a clear area to open the engines up.
B. Keep a sharp lookout, stick to the edge of the congestion, but maintain speed. Since there are so many boats underway your wake doesn’t matter.
C. Keep a sharp lookout, reduce speed to decrease wake height but maintain enough speed for steerage to maneuver.
D. Keep a sharp lookout but maintain course and speed despite what may be going on with other vessels.
Do you know the best answer? If you think so, leave it in a comment below. Thanks for participating and have a great time on the water this weekend.

Sick of seeing plastic pollute your waterways? So was Boyan Slat, a 19 year old from the Netherlands who developed an unique method of collecting the smallest particles of plastic. This system is driven by natural winds and currents, is 33 times less expensive and has a smaller carbon footprint than conventional clean-up methods.
Tell us… do you think this is feasible? Take a look at his website, and watch his Feasibility Study or TEDx Talk.

Look at this amazing, scientific anomaly: An albino Great White Whale!
This Australian Whale has been sighted migrating up the east coast of Australia since 1991.
Make sure you know how to safely view with large marine mammals while boating!

What is the coolest animal you have seen while boating? Do you have pictures?
"Thar he blows!" In a scene straight out of Moby Dick, a rare white whale is back and putting on a show for his fans off the eastern coast of Australia this week.

#QuestionOfTheWeek time. What is a common definition of bow riding?

A. It is a water craft designed to allow passengers a place to be seated in front of the helm.
B. It is a maneuver used by skiers whereby they ride the bow wake of the pulling vessel.
C. It is a dangerous activity where riders on a vessel sit on the bow with their feet hanging over.
D. It is a maneuver where the bow is trimmed all the way down through the use of engine tilt and trim tabs.

Do you know the definition? If so, state your answer in a comment below. Thanks for looking!

LIKE if you have this problem!
Gotta leave room for the fish you catch, what would you do? Bigger boat or less gear?
Make sure you know the fishing regulations! http://www.boatus.org/clean-boating/ecosystem/fishing/

#QuestionOfTheWeek time. When it comes to aids to navigation, what is the definition of a dolphin.
A. An ornament on the front of the vessel which helps other vessels determine port and starboard during the day, similar to running lights at night.
B. A maneuver where a vessel steers right and left in order to propel the vessel forward.
C. A cluster of piles in the water grouped and tied together into a single structure, generally used for mooring and navigation.
D. A fixture at the top of a mast which houses the all-around, white running light required for operation at night.
Do you know what a dolphin is? If you do, leave your answer in a comment below. Not too sure? Check out our course for boating on rivers locks and lakes for the answer. http://shout.lt/wbMd
Thanks for participating. Be sure to check back tomorrow for the answer.
