re NYT story, i set the story up, contacted the reported, pleaded, begged, said please for 9 months and finally he went and did it on my suggestion to interview UO professor. i lived EUGENE 1980s then aalaska now taiwan emaol me danbloom at gmail i coined the cli fi term and have been busy popularizing it time magazine is next up, soon. msg me dan

John Yunker photo This was not a novel I would have ever imagined myself writing. But life has a funny way of surprising you. 

The Tourist Trail was inspired by a trip to the Patagonia region of Argentina, where I volunteered with a penguin census for The Penguin Project. I have also to traveled to Norway and Antarctica, where portions of The Tourist Trail are set. It was on these trips where I began to see just how badly we are treating our oceans and their many inhabitants. 

The novel began its life as a short story back in 2008 when it won the annual Phoebe fiction award. The award inspired me to keep going. And so I did.
