Some say this is the best coffee in the city. I think they have really great coffee. I personally had a cappuccino, my drink of choice and loved it. But as an experience birch isn't really memorable. The baked goods are just okay and the seating area isn't all that great. I would suggest getting the coffee to go and walking to Madison square park and enjoying it there!

Right next to my bus stop! I no longer had to walk those extra two blocks to Starbucks for the morning coffee that sustained me. And, too, sustainability in Manhattan is (for me) trying my little bit to slow the avalanche of chain stores that erode the character of New York. When I entered Birch for this first time, I looked at the paper cups, I asked if those were the only two sizes - your counter person showed me the taller cup Birch normally use for regular coffee. I explained that I wanted a medium sized latte in a big cup, with more room so I could adjust the milk (for me). The Birch Barista was charming, warm, and even created that classic 'apple' pattern in the top of the thick, deep foam. As I watched your Birch barista carefully pouring the hot foaming milk, I’d asked her not to waste the small remainder, since I would likely want to adjust the milk (for me). My first sip of Birch latte was a revelation So much smoother and richer than Star... what'stheirname - nearly perfect (for me)! Just needed a tiny bit more milk (for me). She explained that she could not pour the remaining milk into my cup, and when I said, ok, then I’d settle for cold milk. She explained that she could not put any more milk into my latte, or she’d endanger her job. A fine barista is an endangered species and since Birch and I both have strong feelings about that, I elected to not push the matter but instead pushed the $4 coffee back across the counter because it was not (for me) what I wanted. As I walked out, the cashier asked if I wanted my money back – I was not sure that this was allowed by Birch management, and if this might endanger his job, so I passed. As I walked out to catch my bus, I could almost taste that rich Birch flavor of the coffee I so desperately wanted and needed. Alas! What a shame –now I’d have to walk that extra block and a half to Star… to get coffee that was not as good, but was wanted I wanted (for me). I’d have posted this on the Birch blog, since I am sure this feedback would be useful for a small store competing with giants, but (Alas) it seemed to be taken up by artist promos. I’ll have to use Google or Yelp ratings or Chowhound or the other blogs that encourage comments, from people (like me). Seems like a management problem.

Just moved offices and needed a new coffee place. I am not addicted to coffee but I do appreciate a good Italian style macchiato every now and then. I felt very welcomed when I stepped foot in the door. The barista was very polite taking my order and there was a minimal line. I got my macchiato to stay and it was made in a glass mug. The macchiato was probably the best one I have had on this side of the world. I will definitely be returning. 3 bucks for a macchiato (4 at crappy starbucks)

Coffee shop with a local feel located in Columbus Square. There is a decent stream of goers so if you want a seat, get there revealingly early. The staff is an absolute dream to order form, and every drink is truly made with the utmost skill. If you need wifi, you have to order a drink and they give you a code.

Birch Coffee has many of the virtues that make for a great cafe for writers. 1) Ample space, both in the cafe proper and in the Library loft (which actually has more seating, plus books!). 2) Plenty of plugs. They aren't in every nook and cranny, but they are plentiful. 3) Good drinks and food. The tea I had was heavenly. And apparently the coffee is very strong. 4) A community atmosphere. They host events, reading groups, things like this, and post them on their board by the till. 5) Friendly staff. The guy behind the counter was extra sweet to me. The one fly in the ointment is their free Wi-Fi policy. Unlike the Argo Tea just a few blocks away, Birch only offers 1 hour of free Wi-Fi with purchase. My threshold for a balance between enough wireless time and the needs of a food establishment is 2 hours. 1 isn't enough, I say. However, this can be a good thing if you're a fiction writer. The Internet is distracting even away from home. You won't have as much of a problem here. Thus the place gets 4 stars. I'll definitely be back, as the space is really cozy and home-y. I like that there's a couch for lounging up in the Library. I also like that there's a library, period. I know I'll be dropping off many books when I come and browsing for hidden gems.
