It has been many decades since I visited Yaxchilan and still the place holds strong to my memory. The toucans dancing in the trees. The fireflies blanketing the overgrown airstrip. And everywhere ancient spirits treading silently over electric green moss.
Hidden in the jungle  the Mayan ruins of Yaxchilan  Chiapas, Mexico.

This monologue by Kirk Douglas in Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole is one of the most astute commentaries about journalism ever put on celluloid. It sums up the entire movie, which was too cynical for 1951 but amazingly prescient for the 24-hour news cycle to come.
