There's no air pollution in Shenzhen
...as far as I can tell.
The main modes of personal transport seem to be the excellent Metro service (Much like Hong Kong's but newer and expanding); Scooters (which are all electric); Buses (Which are pretty run-down) and walking/cycling.
Many cabs are also all electric (The blue coloured ones).

If something's worth doing, it's worth over-engineering
I got a bunch of freebie reversible USB plugs in Shenzhen and I had the guts of an otherwise perfectly good 32G USB dongle whose shell had disintegrated. I realised I could simply solder the two together to get a more usable single object. However it's a bit fragile and janky.
So I took it upon myself to attach a copper wire loop hooked-through the single pair of strain-relief tabs on the shell and running through a spare bit of insulation for heavier-gauge wire (plus some solder to add rigidity to the "handle").
Then I potted it in with hot-melt glue, put a bit of kapton down the contact side for good-measure and wrapped the whole shebang in a couple of layers of baby-blue heat-shrink tubing.

If anyone's considering or pending the ACTEW downlight upgrade...
1) Totally worth it
2) They don't do dimmable MR-16's or those on a motion/daylight sensor
3) They also have to check only one of the in-ceiling transformers (for MR-16s) so that they're "compatible", but it's weird they don't have to check all of them (or just none of them)
4) They'll replace any other filament globes in the house with CFs at the same time
5) Make sure you keep/find/steal a bunch of busted bulbs to put in the sockets that are going to be replaced as the contractors have to take-away the matching number of halogen/filament globes as the LEDs/CFs they've used. (Actually you don't need to stick them in the sockets, just hand them to the contractors)
6) There's a weird part iPad form-filling, part phone conversation that has to happen at the end to make sure you're happy with the service and the contractors ant defrauding ACTEWAGL.

I got stung by the "have dead bulbs to swap" rule, as I'd previously replaced some dead bulbs with cheapie LEDs that had also died. These can't be used as returns. In the end I had to send-out perfectly good bulbs from my dimmable sockets so that the numbers matched-up.

I agree, I'd rather see one simple DC converter and 12V leads driving it than one converter per light.  There are resistance issues in low voltage DC transmission to watch out for, but just use decent cable.

The dimmable one from Jaycar goes down to about 60% brightness on the circuit we've got it on at the moment, whereas the halogens go down to ~20%.  So it makes the room dimmer, but not by as much.  Still, it does add an ambience.

What I really want is a good electrician that can come in and replace some of these old fittings with decent, modern systems.

I feel it's a little bit of both - there are multiple bins in the testing machine. All the caps I saw fell into the first one. More experienced hackers have suggested there's multiple tolerance and quality binnings for any given component run.

And the academy award for best address labelling goes to...
Mr. Trevor Dickinson (http://www.trevordickinson.com/) of Newcastle Productions (http://newcastleproductionsart.com/)

Oh and ifyou're worried about putting my parcel locker address up in the clear, feel free to mail be an explodive device or the ever popular bag of white powder, but you'll get a quicker response if you just look me up in the phone book and murder me in person.

Probably the best value and quality of all the Weston Thai restaurants (Currently 2 others), A perfectly good Thai take-away with unpretentious decor and prices.

Had the tapas share plate. This was seafood based and was very fresh/edible. I can recommend this for an easy, unassuming lunch, yet still high quality.
